FIRES.

"WOMAN'S NAEROW ESCAPE. (by telegeaph—press association.) . . Nelson, August 10. . This forenoon a six-roomed house on Waimca Koad, owned and occupied by W. Kirby, carrier, was completely destroyed by fire, tl'io water pressure being quite inadequate. The fire was caused by a k-apoc mattress placed before a fire to dry catching alight. An old bedridden woman, Mrs. Batcy, Mrs. Kirby's mother, was rescued by a neighbour when the room was full of smoke and flame. She had a narrow escape. The insurances are as follow:—£2so 011 the house in the Imperial Office, £100 on tho furniture, and £45 on the piano in the Norwich Union. Tho losses over the insurance are considerable. DWELLINGHOUSE DESTROYED. Dunedin, August 10. ■ A four-roomed. house at Roslyn, owned by Mr. Timothy Casey, and occupied by Mr. Gharles M'Kcnzie, was destroyed by fire on Saturday night. The house, valued at £250, was insured for £150 in the Sun Office. Tho furniture was uninsured.

HOUSE GUTTED. Inveroargill, August 10. A six-roomed house owned by Messrs, Lennio and Sons, and occupied by Mr. Dovolosky, was gutted by fire this morning. The house was insured in the National Office for £150, and the furniture for £100. Most of tho furniture was saved. .
