CAPTAIN COOK'S PROPOSED MONUMENT AT SHIP COVE. Sir, —Dr. Hociien is wrong in thinking'that , wit proposed- monument to Captain Cook is to bo erected on Motuara Island. The"''site chosen by tho committee which has this matter' in hand, is on the shore of Ship Cove. j ' s ver y accessible from Pieton, and duriug the summer months is visited by hundreds of,, excursionists. It is, besides, a particularly appropriate spot' whereon to build some memorial of Captain Cook, because nc spent there 100 days altogether during the course of his'three voyages,. and it is tho only part of' New Zealand he touched at in every one of them. He made Ship Cove his Madqiiarters •yhils') in New Zeiland waters, Wld cleaned hi> ships there, dried his gunpowder, -and- took in wood and water preparatory to sailing in search of fresh discoveries. There is no doubt'that ho had a great affection for the placo. L'he proposed monument, I understand, is to bo quite a simple ono, consisting of a plain stone obelisk with inscriptions on tho sides ? the base, similar, to that erected in memory of Vancouver on tho island of the same name, and • to the one at Hawaii marking the snot where Cook was killed. I quite agree with Dr. Hocken that a fitting monument- to Captain Cook should bo. Placed in one of our four large cities, but to carry out such a work in 'a proper manner would cost a great deal more money tliail it is proposed to spend on the, unpretentious ono at'Ship'Cove.—l am, .etc.,' July 31.
