PALMERSTON. The Palmerstou North Hospital Board has accepted the tender of Messrs. Sollit to build a new operating theatre. When finished tho theatro will bo one of tho most complete iu tho Dominion. Advantago has been taken to inspect almost every operating theatro in tho Dominion, and tho,plans have been approved of by tho Inspector-General of Hospitals. Advice from various surgeons has been sought also in and out of the Dominion, so as to bo certain that no point has been missed. Tho fittings for tho theatro have been ordered from England and America, and are, it is stated, of the latest description. Tho theatre will probably bo finished at the end of tho year. MASTERTON. The enterprise 'which characterises tho members of the local branch of the Y.M.C.A. is shown by the well attended weekly meetings, ill which the programmes submitted aro of a most varied and instructive nature. An i interesting paper on "Ceylon" is to bo read I shortly by Mr. D. Hebenton, who managed a tea plantation there for three and a half years. Tho address will cover the traditions and customs of tho people, and tho products of tho country. There has been an unusually prolonged spell of cold feather in the Wairarapa of late (says a Masterton Press Association message). Tho degrees of frost registered for tho last sis consecutive nights were respectively, seven, two, ten, twelve, ten, and four. The nights and early are phenomenally cold for this district. Rain, snow, sleet, and frost frequently occur within short periods. . A meeting of the Wairarapa sub-branch of the Wellington District Teachers' Institute will bo held 'at the Technical {-School Building, Jlasterton, at 2 p.m. to-morrow. PAHIATUA. The induction of .the Rev. J. Chalmers Mills, who was recently called- to this district, took place on Wednesday afternoon at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, a large congregation being in attendance. The service was conducted by tho Rev. J. Paterson, of Wellington, who also addressed tho congregation at tho conclusion of the induction. The inducting ceremony was performed by tho Rov.Mr.. Thompson, of Carterton, while the Rev. J. M'Caw, of'Martiuborough, addressed tho new minister. ; CARTERTON./ / In consequence of the Wellington Education Board passing ovor the recommendation of tho Carterton School Committeo regarding thoappointment of a pupil-teacher for the Caftorton School, tho committeo has passed a resolution requesting the Board to reconsider tho matter, and give reasons for its action in over-ruling tho selection of the committee. GREYTOWN. Notwithstanding tho unsettled weather, the farmers have made good progress with getting in their early crops. So far, oats and barley have mostly been sown. 1 1 The last few days have been a mixture of snow, hail, rain, and frosts, with an earthquake thrown in. Mr. Loasby. At a recent, moeting of . tho dramatic society it was decidcd. to give afancy dross ball at an early date, and a committee was sot up to deal with tho arrangements. A man named Herbert Popo was charged at tho Police Court on Tuesday beforo Messrs. B. R. Gardener and W. C. Nation, J's.P., with false pretences. It appeared that accused had been in Levin for some time representing himself to bo Messrs. E. W. Mills and Co.'s traveller, and making fraudulent transactions with business people in tho town,. though, . eyen '~,if ,he ; had not been found, out,-Lis'own .'gainsi.would 'have practically amounted to . nothing. : The Bcnch convicted, him, aiid ordered llim.to bo Sent to prison for nine months.' , Amongst a great .many of the local residents tho chief topic of conversation at tho present timo seems to be boxing, and as a result tho membership of . the boxing club is increasing noticeably. There is a movement on foot in Levin to form a Savago Club, and, judging by the interest taken a good club ought'to be formed. There was a Savago Club in Levin dome years ago, but after lingering for a long time it died for want of support. The liockoy match between Levin and Manakau played at Manakau yesterday resulted in a win for Manakau to 2to 1. Mr. Dowdney refereed. The local Y.M.C.A. team journeyed to' Otaki to meet the Otaki teamj the game resulting in a draw,'neither side scoring. SHANNON. ' The weather lately has been mild, with light frosts at night, but a bitterly cold wind blow from the ranges on Wednesday after- ' noon. " .

Nono of tlio Shannon Timber Company's land offered was sold. Mr. J. R. Stansell was successful in; auctioning two' of his own sections at £19 10s.. Two more sections were sold p'rivately. ; 'At a meeting of the Bridge Committee on Wednesday night in tho Druids' Hall, final arrangements were made for tho opening ceremony and tho banquet to Mr. John Stevens, M.P., on Monday next. It was decided to alter 'the name of the Society to the Featherston Young People's Biblo Class, with Mr. Gray as leader pro tcm. Misses Jackson and Sadler, and Mr. Aitcheson were elected a committee, and Mr. Gray secretary. A successful short-night dance, under tho auspices of the Firo Brigade, was held in the Town Hair on Wednesday evening, the attendanco being very, satisfactory. Mrs. A. Burt presided at tho piano, and Messrs. C. Lust and A. Higgison wore M.C.'s. Tho danco next week will bo a long niglif. ; Mr. K. G. Robertson had tho misfortune to injure his right hand rather severely on Wednesday afternoon. Ho was assisting to coax tho horse attached to Mr. J. Martin's cart, and, in shoving tho wheel, his hand got caught by a board protruding between tho bodv of the cart and tho'wheel.
