HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.

PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL. Tho fortnightly meeting of tho Petono Borough Council was held last ovening. Thero were present: His Worship tho Mayor (Mr. j. y. M'Ewan), Councillors Colo, Short, Young, ' Dr. Harding, Southgato, Castlo, Colquhoun, Ladder, and Smith. ; Tho AVoodwaro Timber ■ Company, Petono, 'wrote stating that they had overlooked tho last discount day for their gas bill, and asked the Council to allow discbunt as they wero large consumers. It was resolved that the request bo not granted^ ; The Auckland Fleet' Committeo advised that the flag sent by tho Potone Council had been received. Messrs. Radford and Co. were granted a sccond-hand dealer's license. Thp New Zealand Defenco Offlco wroto informing tho Council that the full amount claimed for the damaged lamp, viz., £11 Is. Gd;, will bo paid. ' His-Worship tho Mayor brought up the question of a sewerago scheme for the sanitary service of Petone, and suggested that a committee be set up to go into tho question. - ■ . Councillor Colquhoun moved that tho Mayorfand Councillors Cole, Short; Lodder, Southgate,. and tho mover bo a committeo to go into tho matter. Councilor Short moved as an amendment that tho whole Council go into the matter, and this, was carried by 5 votes to 3. Tho ciaretaker of the Recreation I Ground wrote stating that he had applied to tho refereo to have the game of football stopped on Saturday last till he cleared tho lino but he (the referee') refused. Tho Mayor said that, as the Rugby Union expected tho ground to bo kept olear, the caretaker's lott-er should be forwarded to tho Union. This was agreed to. •In reference to the request of tho deputation from Korokoro, which waited oil the Council last meeting, with reference to the local sanitary servico, it was resolved, on Councillor Southgato's motion, seconded by Councillor Colquhoun that a cart be sent up to Korokoro once a fortnight. LOWER HUTT BOROUCH COUNCIL. Tho usual fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers, Lower Hutt, last night. Mr. T. A. Peterkin, tho Mayor, was in the chair, .and thero were also present—Councillors Russell, Baldwin, Judd, Ward, O'Sullivan, Hodgins, Wildsmith, Hughes, and Ross. .Councillor Ross brought up tho fact of private information having been made uso of by a member, of tho Press, who was present now.; Ho considered that it was a serious mattor if this should be allowed to go on. Other Councillors who spoko considered that this mattor could not have been privato or in committee, or the reporter could not have been in possession of tho facts. Councillor Ward considered that Councillor Ross should not havo mado the chargo against tho Press without moro, proof. Tho mattor thou dropped.

A' petition was received from seven owners of property fronting tho Baker dedication in Middle Waiwetu Road, inquiring when tho Council intend carrying out tho formation works' in conncction with tho widening of the road,at that point.—lt was-resolved that tlio matter bo referred to the Finauco Committee to roport. ; •■ ' Tho : AVellingtoii City Council wrote stating that a meeting of delegates from local bodies with reference to the proposed pipo and traffic bridgo over tho Hutt River would' bo hold in tlio Town' Hair on July 29. It was resolved that the Mayor and Councillor Baldwin represent the Council. • ■>

i Mr. N. Senior, who met with an accident at tho Potono Woollen Mill while adjusting a belt,' through his clothes being caught oil a spindle, is getting on fairly well. It was fortunate that Senior was taken in at the end rather than tho.side of the shaft, or ho would no doubt have been killed by coming in contact, with a table. His clothes were torn off him, and ho was much cut about tlio face, and body. \

The Petono Brass Band; rendored a programmo of music on tho ltecrcation Ground on Sunday afternoon. ■ Tho weather was fine, andv a good crowd of residents turned out to hear tho band. A collection was taken upin aid of tho instrument fund, amounting to' £4 10s. Tho items rendered, and which wero. much- appreciated, aro as follow-.—March, "Wyndcliffe," F. OrdHume; selection, 1 ."Imcrezia- Borgia," Donezetti; waltz, "Will o' the Wisp," Ambrose Bourrio: plantation episode, "Cows in the Cotton," JI.-Hi Hall; selection, "Indra," Flotow; fantasia, "Village Carnival," Maurice Rayner; inarch, "Blazo Away," A. Holtzman. An open-air meeting; was held by tlio NoLicenso League in Jackson Streot, Petono, on Saturday ovening, the speakers being Mr. W. J. Helyer (Wellington),' Rov. R. Wilson, and Mr. Thos. Townscnd, - Mr. Helyor illustrated his address by tho aid of pictures,, showing tho offe.cts of drink upon the drinker, also showing the returns to: labour and wealth produced in various trades, with the returns from the liquor trade much below all others. Mr. Townsond dealt with tho economic' arid revenue questions." All' the spoakors woro accorded a good hearing, and questions-wore asked and answered at the close. • At the Petono Magistrate's Court yesterday, bofore Messrs. R. Motlies and W. Inglis, J.P.'s., Edward . Ashby, for trespassing in a '-billiard-room,'- and refusing to leave aftor being warned, was convicted and ordered to pay 7s. costs, or in default 12 hours' imprisonment. Tho same accused, for using; obsceno language in a public place, elected: to bo dealt with summarily; and was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, the warrant to bo suspended so long as accused is of good behaviour. Jamps. Batic, for behaving in an offensivo manner at a railway station, was fined .lOs., witness expenses 65., costs 75., or in default 24 hours' imprisonment. Soveral civil cases woro called, but were adjourned till next Court-day, somo of tho summonses not being served.
