Judge and Mrs. Haselden arrived from Nelson and Picton by the Patecua on Saturday. . - Chief Judge Palmer and Judge Reeves arrived back from Christchurch by tho Maori yesterday; Mr. Lan S. Simson, of tho Lands 1 Department, Gisborne, is at present-in Wellington on private business; Mr. C. Holdswort-h, general manager of the Union Steam Ship Company, was a passenger to Sydney by the Mahono on Friday. Judge Jones, of the Native Land Court, is at present in Wellington on official business. Ho will leave for Gisborne on Tuesday morning. Tho Hons. R. H; J. Reeves, and J. Marshall \yere passengers by the Arahura, which left for Nelson, and tho West Coast on Saturday. Mr. G. H. Barnes, manager for Messrs. Moynell'and Gunn, arrived by the Monowai yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. Barnes are Staying at tho Grand Hotel. Mr. Harcourt. Beatty, Miss Madgo, M'lntosh, and tho members of Messrs. Meylioll and Gunn's Company arrived by tho Monowai from tho South yesterday. Tho Rev. J. A. Crookson, M.A., M.8., of Bendigo, Victoria, is duo at ,tho .Bluff to-day. on his way to act as "supply" at St. John's Church, Wellington, for the next four or fivo Sundays. ■ ; Our Dunedin special correspondent telegraphs: Mr.\ll. Greig is leaving tho. employ of .Thomson, Bridger and Co. to take the position of manager of Mr. E. C. Daniels' timber yard at Masterton. Tho Rev. A. H. Heron and his wifo wero given a sond-olf in St. James's Church School-; room, Lower Hutt, on Friday evening. Both tho departing minister and Mrs. Heron received souvenirs from tho parishioners. Mrs. Annie Bcsant, tho well-known lccturor on thcosophy, will arrivo in Wellington by tho Mauawatu express on Friday evening. Sho will givo public lectures on Saturday and Sunday nights, and on Monday she will leavo for Christchurch.. .' . Phillips, lately in command of tho 'U|iion..CQniposy'^-^n.6^' 1 has had to resign from the ■ service "on account of failing health. Captain Phillips has been in tho employ of tho Union Company for a quarter ,of a century, and was. as'popular with tho travelling public as ho Was valued as a servant ,of tho Union Company. Ho is now at his homo, in Sydney. Mrs. G. E. Tolhurst, wifo of Mr. G. E. Tolhurst, inspector, for New Zealand of the Union Bailli of Australasia, diod at her residence, Grant Road,' on Saturday inorning. Since her return from England at tho end of last year, Mrs. Tolhurst's health had boon' tho eauso of increasing anxiety to hor friends, and hor death was not altogether unexpected. Tho. funeral took place privately yesterday.
A Press Association telegram from Christehurch states:—Mr. M'Nicklo, recently olccted to tho. Civil Servico Superannuation Board, was given a " send-off . last evening on tho occasion of his promotion as postmaster at Bulls. Tho gathering- was'a' very largo one, and a presentation was mado by Mr. Gannaway, assistant officer in chargo, who feelingly oxpresscd tho general regret at Mr. M'Nicldo's departure.
