PROPOSED EXPORT, DUTY; ON KAURI: ' (BT TELEGBAM—PEESS ASSOCIATION.) , - : i .. Auckland, July 23. Reference-to the fast disappearing-kauri was made at-last evening's meeting--of-'the Trades and Labour Council, and a resolution was.passed-urging, the Government to place a; heavy export duty on that timber: Several members stated that it was possible to buy. tho article cheaper in Sydney than in Auckland, while another speakor ,was positive that a timber ring existed locally.' .The,president remarked that tho trouble was caused through the kauri being exported in flitches, while another member considered that it should all'be sawn in Auckland. Before forwarding tho resolution to the government it was dccidcd to subniit it to the North' Auckland Timbers Workers' Union for their approval.. ARCHITECTS HIGHER DUTIES. TheCouucil of the New Zealand Institute 'of Architects has passed the following resolution:—"That tho New -Zealand-.lnstitute 'of "Architects views with regret an attempt on the part of sawmillors and others to obtain any increase in duties on imported: timber because its success would increase the cost of building and keep out of the Dominion a most useful, and in many cases indispensable, material." Copies of this resolution have been forwarded 'to the Hon. J.. A. Millar, Minister for Customs, and Mr. W. 11. P. Barber, M.P. '
