WEDNESDAY REPRESENTATIVES. WIN FOR WELLINGTON.' - Weather conditions for the contest between the Wellington Wednesday representatives and the AVairarapa Thursday .men wero about as unfavourable as possible, aud tho same may bo said of tho state of the ground. A cutting southerly blew straight across the playing area,, while intermittent showers., of rain rendered the already inuddy, ground still sloppier. .When play commenced tlieio was a largo pool.of water in one corner of tho field, which gave an accurate idea of tho saturated state of all parts of tho area. Taking these conditions into consideration, therefore, it was not surprising that the game, in tho latter half, resolved itself ■ into a mud scramble, from • which AYollington emerged victorious. During the first spell some attempts w-ere made 'at- 'passing and back play, but it was soon seen that such efforts' wero wasted. About 200 people watched, tho game. Following aro tho teams:— AVELLINGTON. ' 1 FuJI-baek: Clark. Three-quarters: Digby, Killeen, Schultz. Five-eighths: AA'hittaker. Half: Cording. Forwards: Browning, AVatsfin, Nolls, Joyce, M'Kay, Gosling, Browne. Wing Forwards: Ready,' Kelly. AVAIRARAPA. .- < Full-back: Piillsford. Three-quarters: M'Cabe, Coriiish, F.' Fairbrother., Five-eighths: Killop, M'Kiiinon. i Half: Spooncr. ' • .•■ Forwards: Kilminster, Tocker,. Lawrtpce, Philips, Parker,. Tait, E. Fairbfother. • • Wing Forward: C. Fairbrother. Wellington kicked off, and their forwards soon had AVairarapa iu difficulties, until-a pertalty kick enabled tho visitors to regain some ground. _ Tho Blacks returned to the attack, and Digfcy lost a chance by dropping a pass. Then forward play became tho order, of the day, continuing in front of the : AA'airarapa, goal until''good pack work and some mulling by Scliultz afforded relief and shifted tho sceno of operations to..Wellington territory. Thero AVairarapa had an ineffectual attempt to kick a penalty goal, and, a little later, Killop Set a forward rush going, with tho result that C. Fairbrother scored. Cornish failed to improve tho try.—-Welling-ton 0, AVairarapa 3. From the kick-out the Blacks made the play lively,' and compelled their"opponents to force. Soon after Scliultz got away, but, hanging oh too" long, was grassed-. by M'Kinnon. Again -forward scrambles were the order, and from one of these Gosling touched down, but Cording failed to convert.—AYollington 3, AVairarapa 3. The next occurrence of note was a fruitless attempt at a penalty goal, by Browne, the ball being too heavy for good place-kick? ing. This was followed by Wellington forward rushes, which M'Cabo and E. Fairbrother were instrumental in stemming. At last, however, Kelly started a loose rush, which gave Gosling a chance to Bcoro after a bit of good following up. Cording failed to improve tho try. AVelifngton' 6, AVairarapa 3.' Aftttr this the backs commenced to take a hand in _ttfo game, and Digby lost o golden opportunity by dropping the ball, after Killeen had made a good opening. Forward rushes, led by Kelly"(Wellington) and,Tate (Wairarapa), saw neither side'gain any permanent advantage, and the next try was secured by AVhittaker as tho result of a passing bout, set going by Cording. Failure by AVhittaker to convert saw tho score, AA'ellington 9, AVairarapa 3. Before half-time soundedF. Fairbrother almost got over for AA'airarapa, ,but the effort: ended 1 in 'a'. foife'e-d&Wfl.''"' On resuming,.AVellington forwards made tho pace hot, and almost immediately -visitors had to save _by forcing down, AVith AVairarapa defending a few yards from their goallino,' Whittakor picked'up' tho leather-and dashed over. Kelly took the kick, but did not succeed in converting. AYollington 12, AVairarapa 3. . This iwas soon followed by another try, , this time secured by M'Kay, after .r forward scramble in'., tho mud. . Cording failed to pilot., tho.'ball; betwoen t-lio -posts. AVellington 15, Wairarapa-'3. From this., stage on the game was little more, than a scramble, in the slush, and the Black vanguard, being more active, kept the opposing. side fully occupied with defence. Kelly led the. homo team, and Schultz did all, that was required of the backs. The latter player afforded no little amusement to the spectators, when, after facing, from half-way in order to seouro a try, he slipped at the critical moment, and enabled a Blue man to force. AVithin .fivo minutes of the finish, Wairarapa worked down the field by forward play,' and endeavoured to reduce the home team's lead, but it. was.of no avail, and play ended with tho scores:' AVellington . ; ...-, .- ... 15 ,- AVairarapa ... ... ... ... 3 Mr, F.
