A PAK-A-POO CASE.
I,: CHINAMAN FINED. ; (BI TELEGIIirH—PKr.S3 ASSOCIATION.) Chrlstchuroh, July 14. ' Ah Mow was charged with having assisted to conduct a pak-a-poo lottery. The evidence given for the prosecution was that two constables had obtained pak-a-poo tickets from another Chinaman, but that the defendant had been present, and had later given them a "bank" ticket.to comparo .with their own tickets. Mr. Alpers, for the accused, addressed the Bench, and contended that the defondant had nob assisted to conduct the pak-a-poo lottery, but had at most only helped to sell the tickets, which was quite distinct, from tho management., The seller of the ticket was analagous to a tobacconist in Christchurch who sold Tattersall'a tickets, and .the showing of the "bank" ticket would only place Ah Mow in a similar position to a man who, after having obtained a Tattcrsall's ticket, bad shown the list of tho winning numbers to a friend who had a ticket. It was not an offence under tho Act to assist in selling tickets. , Tho defendant was fined £10 and costs.
