,: ACCIDENT TO THE WAIPOHI. The Union Steam Ship Company's s.s. .Waipori, from Westport, entered.within' Lyttelton Heads about 1 p.m. on Tuesday, and anchored ill Camp Bay, flying a signal which, on account of the' very thick, weather, could hot be' clearly made out, says the "Lyttelton Times." The steam launch Purau was dispatched by the Union Company's authorities to ascertain what had happened, and brought back word that the Waipori's steam steering gear was damaged, and that the tug was . required. The tug Canterbury went Ito the Union steamer's'assistance, and. brought her within the moles ttf a' 4 berth at No. 3 wharf. Captain Tate, master'of the Waipori; reported 'that the :steamer, with a full' cargo ofcoal, left, Westport at 2 a.m. on Sunday, and'experienced easterly winds, rain, and generally thick weather. Thei vessel passed Cape Campbell at '1.20 p.m. on Monday, and the: accident which compelled her to 6eek assistance happened about 6 p.m. the same day, when the pinion of the steam steering gear carried; away. Recourse was had- to the hand steering apparatus, which was somewhat awkward compared with that'which had been disabled. It was impossible to repair the gear, .and With" the .aid of the hand gear the vessel was brought to Lyttelton Heads, but as a heavy 6ea was running it was deemed- inadvisable to attempt to bring her within the moles. The damage to the steering gear is not. serious, and will not delay the vessel, as it can be repaired whi|e she, is'discharging.... The, Waipori has a part cargo oh board for Wellington.
