SPECIAL BRANCH OF THE BOARD OF TRADE. . (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION- —COPYRIGHT.) • tonciori, July 8., The Board of Trado has formed a branch to superintend matters relating to British participation in futuro international exhibitions, and to superintend tho organisation of exhibits. Mr. Wintoo (?) has been appointed head of tho branch) and Sir Isidor Spielmann, director of tho art section. Sir Isidore Spielmann, formerly editor of the "Magazine of Art," who supervised the collection of pictures for the New Zoaland Exhibition, has had a long and varied experience in the promotion of art exhibitions. Ho was kniirhted in 1905. _ : . Tho committee appointed in 1906 by tho Board of Trade to inquire into the participation of Great Britain in international exhibitions, published their report in October, 1907. Although the evidence showed that firms did not as a rule gain much from taking part in such oxhibits, the committee was in favour of the continued participation of Great Britain in all important exhibitions, because of the indirect advantages'resulting from them, and because they served as advertisements of British manufactures' as a whole. The committee therefore recommended that, in order to ensure continuity of organisation from exhibition to exhibition, a special officer—of approximately tho rank .known as Principal Clerk—should bo attached to one' of the departments of tho Board of Trade as the officer specially concerned with .exhibition work, and that he should bo primarily responsible for ,the proper organisation, conduct, and winding up of all exhibitions.
