CRICKET.

TRIARGUUR CONTEST CONTROVERSY.

ENGLISH COMMENTS. THE INVITATION TO AUSTRALIA. (by TELEGEA.rH —PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.), London, July 8. Thero is considerable comment 011 the recommendation of tho Advisory ■ Board that the Marylebono Club (which invited the Australian cricketers to visit England in 1909) should inform the Australian Board of Control "that tho counties are so strongly in favour of triangular contests that it will be impossible to invito any colonial oleven to visit England for tho 1909 season except for that purpose."

Tho "Athletic News" declares that tho Marylebono Club is-'coercing, not considering Australia, It adds that Friday's decision does not tend in the direction of fulfilling the club's moral obligation under its invitation to tho Australians to visit England in 1909. /. Several, personal letters in sporting newspapers disapprove of tho Marylebono Club's attitude. Ono declares that the Club ignored common politeness and fairness towards the Australians. , A writor in the "Express" says:—"Australian cricketers reap a rich harvest in England. Friday's decision shows that tho money in cricket is not tho purpose for which the Australians are invited." Most of the newspapers, apparently recognising a delicate, situation, do not seem desirous of commenting on the subject. • JACKSON'S VIEW. .'AUSTRALIA BADLY' TREATED. ,(Kec. July 10, 2.30 a.m.) - , London, July 9. Tho Hon. F. Stanley Jackson, tho eminent international cricketer, in a letter to "The'. Times," says the Advisory Board's resolution is needlessly curt, not to s'av ungenerous. It seems as if the Board, has been either misled, or has been unduly hurried to a conclusion. .Because the Australians are unable to take part iira triangular contest, surely that is no sufficient cause for the Board's action.

Mr. Jackson docs not think tho Board has sufficient reason to peremptorily toll Australia that sho- must either join in tho tournament or stay at home. He earnestly pleads for ( tho harmony and good feeling essential to international cricket. Ho advises tho withdrawal of tho Board's resolution, and tho acknowledgment that a mistake has been committed. Ho. hopes. that the counties will extend-'a cordial invitation on tho old lines without now conditions for'a visit nest year.
