SOUTH AFRICAN FODDER.
■ VICTORIA'S ATTITUDE. (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.) Molbourno, July 9. The Minister for Agriculture (Mr. Swinburne) has agreed that South African fodder (chaffed) may' be re-exported to, India and elsewhere without being removed'from bond. The Now South Wales Minister for Agriculture, (Mr. Perry) is co-operating with tho Victorian Minister for Agriculture, (Jlr. Swinburne) as regards the embargo on South African fodder. Mr. Perry ,says I hoy have'nearly every known cattle disease in South Africa, anil tho cabled assurances from Cape' Colony as to places of production being free from disease havo.not'been clear :and satisfactory. The roply to one cablegram from Australia was that I .none of the diseases named existed in the districts where the stuff was grown, but cases had. oceurrod at Capetown and in tho villages. "It was tantamount (says Mr. Perry) to saying that though plague was in Sydney,' New South WalosWas free from plaguo. I suppose what ithvas meant to convey was that no cases had been discovered in the country districts, but Hie diseases had occurred in the depots'for those districts. The reply was, of course, regarded as unsatisfactory. • "The'cost to ■.New South. Wales of. fighting scab-.in sheep l\as been '.considerably over iSIOO.OOO, and the outbreak 0f'18534 involved an expenditure of between J?,io,ooft and .£60,000 before it was 'stamped out. The Staw'lias .also spent iC50,000 in keeping the Queensland ticks back, and since the. pest got over the border New South Wales hgs spent .£IO,OOO .in trying to'drive it out, .and-, the : task is not'-iyet finished." :■ v.-,'
