A farewell social was tendered to him at the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall last evening. , Lieutenant IV G. Hume, having resigned his commission ill the D Battery, lias been placed on tho aotiyo list, unattached, with rank of Lieutenant, ' Mr. Walter Gollan has been appointed clerk and accountant of tho Prisons Department in succession to Mr. T. E. Richardson, who rotires on superannuation. Mr. Gollan was previously assistant clerk. Mr. Charles Taylor and Miss' Ella Carrington (Mrs. Taylor),'who liavo been touring tho country with ; a dramatic company for soma years past, left for Sydney yesterday. It'is understood that the company has been disbanded, and that Mr,.' and Mrs. Taylor intend to tako up another branch of the theatrical business. Mr. Ghns, Wi M'Loughlin, who, has been appointed sole agent' of Carter's champion Sasli Lift and Lock Company, was presented yesterday by the Wellington Tally Clerks' Association with a travelling bag and pipes. Mr. Samuel Tumor, a director of the English dairy produce firm of Wilier and Riley, and an Alpine climber and explorer of some noto, .arrived in Wellington from Sydney by tho Maitai oil Wednesday evening. Since Mr. Turner was in New Zealand last ho has visited Russia, and whilst in St. Petersburg ho was awarded tho silver medal for exploration by the Royal Geographical Society -of Russia for some discoveries made by him when scaling the Altai' mountains in Siberia 'a' &uple of years ago, a subject on which Mr. Turner wrote a book. Mr; Turner is one of. the few climbers who have scaled Mount Cook, and/his hazardous climb, %of Mount ■Nga'ruhoe in the winter will be remembered by 'those who take an interest in mountainclimbing feats. At. present Mr. Turner is in Ne\v Zealand, to arrango with factories to consign tho coming season's output through his firm.
