■; • . ——-6-, A social was held at tho Pctone "Working Men's Club, on Tuesday evening as a farewell to Mr,-R. W. Short, who is giviii" up tho secretaryship of the club.- Mr. biiort was presented by the president, Mr. Harris, on behalf of tho members, with a handsome marble clock, as ;■ a. mark of esteem. Mr. Short, in thanking the members for the present, spoko of tho progress the club had made during the eleven years ho had held office. Mr. S. Newland also received a marble clock. The president, in making' the presentation, • spoke .of his services to the club, and in .the cause of charity, in arranging benefit. concerts for distressed members. Mr. Newland, who was rather taken bv surprise, feelingly responded. Mr. Frank TJpton also received a present of a case of pipes and a life member's ticket, as a token of the esteem in which lie is held by the club members. Mr. Upton returned thanks for the present. • Mr. Short presented the club with two handsome pictures of historic scenes to mark his appreciation of tho many kindnesses received from- tho members. • At the weekly session' of the Hope of Petono Lodge of 1.0. G.T., Bro. T. Townsend, Chief Templar, presided. Two new members wero proposed. After, business the following contributed items to an enjoyable programme: —Sisters Fuller, Brierley, Smith, Den by, Thompson, M. M'Ewan, and Kinsley, Bros. W. M'Ewan, Bonishae, Kerslake, Trailo, Donovan, Jones, J. ,W. M'Ewan, and Townsend. . -' i
