MASTERTON.. ; There were two cases of bankruptcy in tlio Wairarapa' during the past month, as compared ■ with ono for the corresponding month of last year. Since the beginning of the current year, there- have been seven bankruptcies; as against eight for the first six months of last year. .
To-day, the Masterton Fire Brigade, which "P to the, present has been vested in tbo Borough Counci], will .come under the, control oi the Fire Board. . The secretary of the Board (Mi 1 , R. Brown) will formally take over the list of the Brigade's property this morning, and inspect both fire stations. At the annual meeting of tho 'Masterton I' ire Board, a plan was submitted by Mr. C. G. Monro, of a two-storied firo station in brick. The Board decided to inform Mr. Monro, that the plan would receive consideration wheii,the_ proposal to erect a new firo station was beitlg discussed. A meeting was held in the Board-room of the Y.M.C.A. on Monday evening to inaugurate ,a young ladies No-License Auxiliary League. Mr. D. M'Gregor,. president of tlio No-License League, was in the chair. Mr. P. Bridges, a No-License advocate, by whom the meeting was convened, outlined the plan of work to be undertaken. The object of the auxiliary is to loud assistance in carrying No-License in this district. Sir. T. Dixon also, made some practical suggestions to tho meeting. Officers were elected as follow: — President, Miss Church; vice-president, Miss Pearson ; secretary, Miss Burton. The .quarterly summoned meeting of 'the Masterton Oddfellows' Lodge was held on Monday 'evening, when there was a large attendance. Two new members were initiated into tho Order, Bro. E. M'Cord, G.M., acting as initiating master. Three friends were proposed for admittance. A hearty welcome was extended to ono of the oldest members of the Masterton Lodge—viz., Bro. W. Peart, who for a. numbpr of years has resided in tho Woodvillo district, and the brother was accorded lodpo honours. The monthly meeting of the Matton Borough Council was held yesterday. . Tho Manawatu. County Council wr'oto asking tho Borough Council to be represented 'on 'a deputation to tho Government to urgo that the scope of tho Local Bodies Loans Act ■bo. extended to enable \ local'.bodies to borrow for the construction' of tramways' and sh'o purchase of rolling. stock, machinery, etc. The Mayor (Mr. M'Eldoivnoy) was appointed to act oh tho deputation. Tho gas working account showed a profit during last , month. The: Mayor reported having arranged for a flag for fleet week' at land.The Health Officer pointed out the necessity for a proper drainage, scheme in Marton; and reported on certain premises as'being in an insanitary condition. Tho Borough Engineer reported on tho proposed improvements to-tho" present water' supply, and estimated tho cost at £95. After a .discussion- a 'motion that tho" matter bo taken in hand at once,' and' that' steps' bo' taken to . lay beforo.thc ratepayers a scheme for necessary- improvement-intho water supply, was carried. Councillor Hilton reported with regard to chemical -ougines for - tho -fire hrigado that' tho Brigades Committee considered two engines of this sort were necessary. Tho cost would be. about £140. Tho Mayor, favoured getting; tho opinion of Inspector Hugo,'.of Wellington, but the matter was. postponed for a special. mooting. ,
