MR. KIDSTON.
A FBDEBATED, NOT UNIFIES, AUSIBAUA.
QUEENSLAND'S RESOURCES. j " NO MORE BORROWING, UNLESS-^—" BY TELEGUArn—FItESB ASSOCIATION —COPIBIOnX. 1 (Rec. Juno 26, 10.30 p.m.) London, Juno 26. Tho annual Queensland dinnor was given in tho Holborn Restaurant, Sir H. Tozer (Agent-Goneral for Queensland) presiding. The Premier of Queensland, tho Hon. W. Kidston, was tho principal guest. The guests numbered 130, and included tho High Commissioner for New Zealand, the Hon. W. P. Reeves. Mr. Kidston replied to the toast of " Queensland." He expressed gratification at the State's display at the Franco-British Exhibition at Shepherd's Bush. He dilated on the healthy expansion of all the industries of Queensland. That State had no need- to borrow now, in the fulness of a prosperity such as she had never known before; and she would not borrow any more unless she could put the monoy to profitable use in developing Queensland.
In Queensland they were going to have a period of great industrial activity. New railways would open up minerals and timber and new areas for agricultural settlement. Tho State wanted a steady stream of white immigrants. "The more that come," said Mr. Kidston, "the better for us and tho better for thom." The exhibition at Shepherd's Bush was only a first essay in the propaganda of making Queensland and her resources known to the people of tho British Isles. Queensland, added Mr. Kidston, had paid a large price for the establishment of the Commonwealth. As regards the development of Australia, unification would be a misfortune. There was undoubted need for a central government, but there was also need for strong healthy State governments.
Lieut.-Colonel Seely (Under-Secretary for the Colonies) proposed the .health of Sir Horace Tozer.
