Tho experience of a council which has a ratepayer who wants to pay' 40 years' rates in advance is somewhat , unique, and the Bruca County Counoij has; liad a ' serious, consultation as to .whether it can-accept tho same. However (says tho "Bruce'Herald")', it decided to do so. Tho; rate is a special one with 41' years , yet to run, and was levied to repay a drainage loan raised for tho Clarendon district near Berwick.' Mr. George Graham,of that place, .wishes to leave his land as far,as possible unencumbered with any special v rate"; hence his anxiety to pay the amount in a lump sum. The' amount will be about £40, which the council can put in the bank to a special account, and from it pay Mr. • Graham's' rates as they fall due. The latest determination is to send the American battleships to Now Zealand.
