:—9 [from our special correspondent.] Mr. Owen 0. Pleasants, who unsuccessfully contested the Oroua soat at tho last general election as Government candidate, has again been selected to stand in tho Liberal interest. The Opposition candidate has not yet been 'selected. There are two candidates in the Opposition interest—Messrs. D. H. Guthrie and A. H. Atkinson —in the field at tho present time. Says to-night's Foilding "Star"The New Zealander is fast becoming übiquitous. Wo are again reminded of this by reading in the issue of March 7 of tho "Porto Rico Reviow" of the passing of an old identity of San Juan, Mrs. (Dr.) Cook, and in the obituary notice mention is mado of the interesting fact that her daughter, Mrs. Matheson, had been called back from her honeymoon trip to her mother's death-bed. Mrs.. Matheson is tho wife of nn old Manawatu boy, Mr. Peter Matheson, youngest son of tlie lato Mr. M. Matheson, of Karere, near Palmorston North, and tho brother of Mr. It. M, Matheson, of Makino. Ho was at work in Now York when tho Spanish-American' War broke out, and ho went to the front in Cuba with tho Americans. After tho war ho mado for Porto Rico, wliero he secured a ■ position under tho Government, acquiring a knowledge of the Spanish language. Tho young Now Zoalandor passed an examination which qualified him for a post, and eventually led him into his present position of Commissioner of Customs at San Juan, tho capital of Porto Rico'
