THE AMERICAN FLEET'S VISIT.
Sir, —At a public mooting held in Auckland recently, in connection with tlio approaching visit of tho American floet, it was reported in your columns that ojie Mr. Napier proposed, and iiGarly carried, "a resolution " to tlio offect that tho fortifications at tho North Head and at other points in tho Auckland Harbour, should bo thrown open for tho inspection of our visitors; for, to uso Mr. iNapior's own words, Great Britain would " never, never go to war with Aincrica again." To anyono who, liko the writer, has resided under tho Stars and Stripes, 1 it must bo apparent that this reception is being carried too far, and to no 0110 will this bo moro palpablo than to the Americans themselves, for thoso astuto individuals will at oiicc soliloquise as to the why and whercforo of all this " tliusness," and tho verdict will be fear of Japan and the yellow agony, and "to spito mamma." Tho threadbare nonsense regarding blood being thicker than wator is played out, for anyone investigating tho immigration statistics of the United States for tho past forty years will at once seo that tho Anglo-Saxon strain of the early colonists has been dihit-cd beyond recognition by tho importation into America of hordes of Huns, Greeks, Italians, Russians, and other peoplo from the east of Europe. As regards American affection for tho Old Country, the writer can stato that during a two yenfs' residenco in tho United States ho only saw 0110 Union Jack Hying, and that was carried by a clown at a circus. At tho Buffalo Exhibition tho Mritish flag, was torn down and spat upon by the mol>; and. tho Mayor of Now York wont out with Hags flying and bands playing .to meet the Boer delegates during the recent war. What happened regarding A'enezneia wo all know.—l am, etc., " GO SLOWLY." .
