NAVY LEAGUE.
ANNUAL REPORT. REFERENCES TO NEW ZEALAND. AYo have received a copy of the annual report of the Navy League, a number of which were received from London by Mr.. C. Vv. Palmer by Monday evening's English mail. Of the work of the Leaguo in Now Zealand, the'report says:— " With regard to New Zealand, there is 1 nothing to, bo said which is not satisfactory, so much so tliat it would seem invidious to make spceial mention of any branch as deserving of particular commendation. We aro glad to announce that His Honour Mr. Justice Williams is now the President of the Otago Branch. Your Executive Committee had tho pleasure last summer of meeting the lion, secretary of this branch (Mr. J. A. Johnstone), and they have reason to believe tiiat he left' this country fully impressed with the.value of.the-work tho Leaguo was doing, and lost no time in expressing his opinion when he arrived in Otago. " Tho samo remark applies to Mr. Palmer, tho lion, secretary of the Wellington Branch, whose work has been in tho past particularly arduous. He has, however, the satisfaction of seeing a strong and activo branch as the result of his labours, and it would bo difficult to over-estimate the importance of the work that is being done by branches of the Navy League in New Zealand. "We congratulate New Zealand on the endeavour they are making to provide British seamen for British ships. The New Zealand Governnu-nl has now a vessel, late H.M.S. Sparrow, re-named the' Amokura, in ■ which boys are under training both for the Royal Navy and the Mercantile Marine. Further particulars of this scheme will be given in the ' Navy League Journal' from time to time as intelligence comes to hand. "An anonymous donor contributed the sum of £25 to the Canterbury branch to encourage a prize essay competition in the Christchurch'' schools.'' Wo tender- him our -thanks for this assistance. . . "Very satisfactory is it to receive most
interesting letters from the Navy League schools, and in this connection wo would montion the Collegiate School, Wangauui, the Boys' High School,'Christchurch, and the Waitaki Boys' High School. The hoys' appear, to have approached -tho teaching of the Navy League with a full appreciation, of what their future duties as citizens of the Empire will be, and the value of this early training is not to be over-estimated. "We would also mention the good work tha.t is being done in Nelson, and perhaps we may bo permitted to express the hope that Auckland will follow the lead of the remainder of the Dominion and re-invigorato the branch of the League in that town. . ."Your, committee think..that they owe a special' debt 'of thanks .to the following gentlemen.'who represent the New Zealand branches of the League:— " H. Antill Adley, Esq., Canterbury. "C. W. Palmer, Esq.,, Wellington! -• " Richard Allen, Esq., Southland. "L. L. Hitchings, Esq., Collegiato School, Wanganui. >
"It. E. Bevan-Brown, Esq., Boys' High School, Christchurch. " G. B. Isdale, Esq., Waitaki Boys' High School. . "T. K. Harty, Esq., Otago. " J. W. H. Bannerman, Esq., Otago Boys' High School. . - ■ / "Mrs. Aufrere F en wick, Otago (Ladies'). :.";H.; R; Duncan, Esq., Nelson. ' " Captain John'G.'Tonkin, Napier."
