CHRISTCHURCH TRAMWAYS.
FARES AND CONCESSIONS. (BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL CORUESPONDKNI). , . . Clirlstchurch, June 9. During a discussion on the schedule of fares and concessions by tho Tramways Board yesterday Mr. W. Reece said that a hint had. been given that the Board might consider making still further reductions in the future. He did not know whether it would be right to say that the fares were too low already, but the Board had .before it the example of tho London County Council, which had run into debt to the extent of £2,000,000 m an attempt to run trams on unprofitable fares. The Board had started out on a basis of a penny a mile, and had hoped to' be able to extend, the""double tracks along all tho mam streets, and ultimately to securo a continuous service without anytime-table. If the Board had. adhered to the fares it might have done so, but it had granted concessions 'everywhere. Tho Board should carefully consider the question of concessions. On account of the risk'-of disturbing the public and of upsetting its own finance it had mado only a very small surplus last vear, and it would have to write off tho valuo of a good deal of the stock which it had taken over from the. old tramways, and which it had so far regarded as assets. It must take care of its financos as much as possible.
