NEW MAIL BOAT FOR THE COMMON-' .WEALTH.' i The building of the steamers designed for ; the performance of the Orient' Company's new- • ! mail contract with-the Commonwealth Government is making good progress (says the "Bri- ; tish Australasian" of April 16). ' It was reported some weeks ago that orders 1 rn ' 3een P'. with well-known yards on the Clyde and in Belfast, and wo now learn that the keels of the vessels entrusted to tho> Fairfield Company and Clydebank Company are • complete, whilst in the London and Glasgow ■ Engineering Company's • yard the keel of an- ' other vessel is well advanced. Messrs. Workman, Clark, and Company have at tho-moment no slip available, but materials are coming into the yard and being prepared for rapid construction as soon as a slip is. vacant. Tha dimensions of the steamers are to ! 535 ft.; breadth, 63ft. They will be of about ! 12,000 tons register, and about 12,000 liorso- . power, and will have accommodation for . upwards of 100 saloon passengers, and a largo ;l number of third class. . • i The steamers' have been designed to meet the 1 special requirements of the Australian trade in all respects. The passenger .accommodation mil be of a luxurious character, combining all the latest devices for enhancing the comfort ■; arid safety of passengers. Provision is being made for the carrying, of Government emig, rants or troops, on a large scale in case it ' should be required. The steamers will have a large carrying capacity for frozen produce, and will bo prepared for the fitting of the Mar-' coni apparatus as soon as Marconi signalling stations are installed oil the Australian coast. . ' '■ . tlirough being unable to obtain a second mate. The case is an instance of the hardship resulting from the clause of the Shipping and.Sea-O-men's Act requiring vessels over 100 tons regis- . > tor, going voyages of over 300 miles; to carry two. mates. It is almost impossible to obtain - second mates for _ small coasting sailers, and there is no provision in,the Act. for a temporary permit to allow vessels to leave .with a leading seaman in : place of -a second mate aider exceptional circumstances.
