Dr. Bruce is trying'to arrange an Antarctic expedition, and others aro in contemplation. The Itoyal Geographical Society's Back bequest medal- was awarded to Lieutenant Mulock, R.N., for survey work within tho Antarctic and for Antarctic charts. Sir George Goldie, the president of the Society, roinarked that tho most liotablo ovcnt of tho year was Lieutenant Shackleton's resumption of Antarctic work. ' Dr. William S. Bruce, oceanographor and Arctic explorer, of Edinburgh, proposes an Antarctio expedition to investigate tho Woddell and Briscoe Seas in' islands south of 10 degrees; also to attempt to cross the Antarctic continent. Dr.'Bruce estimates the cost of one ship for two years at £10,000; A second ship would be nocessary to efficiently explore the land. Dr. Charcot will sail for the Antarctic in his new three-masted ship (with auxiliary stoam powor), specially built for him at St. fllalo. The French Parliament is assisting him. The objects of the expedition were referred to on May 20.
