Melbourne, May 25. 'The Postmastoi>Genoral ,(Mr. Mauger) has decided, to accept' the tender of Siemens. Brothers for tbo construction and laying of two new cables to Tasmania,, for £49,000. , 'There is a dispute with, tho Eastern Extension '. Company, which wanted , <£39,000 as payment: for cables.' buildings, and " balance/of subsidy"; but tijo Commonwealth rofused the , offer and decided to lay-ttfo now cables. Tho following recently appoated in Australian papersTho' Eastern Extension Company, under a contract with tho Federal Governmont, receives an annual, subsidy in connection with the Tasnmnian cable service; and in addition 'there is a "receipts guarantee" in which the Commonwealth guarantee •; that the annual receipts to the company shall not be allowed to fall below certain fixed sum. /In 1900 tho Commonwealth Parliament passed an Act abolishing the cable rate of a halfpenny per . word, which had previously beon in force, and had'really been the subject of the guarantee. Since then, therefore, the ■■ company has received only the bare sum originally guaranteed by the Commonwealth as a minimum. The company contonds that during the continuance of the contract the Commonwealth was bound to continue the payment of tho charge per word to the company. A writ has accordingly,been issued by the Eastern Extension Company, claiming damages equal to tho difference between the guaranteed amount and tho amount of receipts if tho halfpenny charge had been continued.
