. - . ■ -» ——— . LOWER HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL. The fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held, last night, when thoro wore present His Worship the Mayor (T. A. I'cterkin), and : Councillors Russell, O'Sullivan, M. J. Hodgins, C. Wildsmith, Jno. Ward, Hughes, Ross, Judd, and Baldwin.: .Mr. Copeland was introduced in connection with the widening of the main road, and-stated, that ho had never had any notification. to remove his boundary hack. .The Engineer said that the Government had gazetted the .line of road as a chain road, and it was one of tho' claims under the old Crown grants, issued under Sir Geoi'go Grey. It was ah old military track, cut (luring the Maori troubles.' Councillor' Ward said that it was an injustice to Mr. Copeland to push back his frontage. ■ Tho Mayor and Councillors Baldwin, Russell! and; Ross were appointed a committee to consider, the position, and are' to meet on Wednesday evening ' next, Sir. Copeland to be present. ■ '■ ;. The'following correspondence 'xtiis received and • dealt' with as indicated From Mrs. H. B. v Eglinton,' requesting that the,drain from th6-Racecourse Road through" the/Eglinton Estato' be 'cleaned " out;. in accordance! with , usageto'_ he attended ; to : at' once. From Mr. G. Windram, submitting the'following terms in, connection with' the 'proposed erection of a bridgo' over theWaiwetu River, viz.: —Tho Council to erect the bridge and carry out the formation of a roadway from tho bridge to Mr. Windram's houso ono ■ chain in width,' and thence to the quarry of a half chain ill width, : in consideration of which tho Council to have the use of the quarry for borough purposes'only for a period of five years; received. . From Mr. 'F. W. Devcreux, requesting to have repairs effected to the footpath fronting his premises; to roply ill terms of the Engineer's report. From the Now. Zealand Express Co., in roply, admitting liability for damage to street lamps; on the bridge, but intimating .that the manager would endeavour to see tho Town Clerk in reference to the amount charged; receivod. From the Potone Borough Council, re charitable aid levy, intimating that they do hot consider the timo opportune to make any move" in tho, matter, as fresh legislation regarding saiile will shortly ■bo considered by Parliament s received. From tho Rev. B. B. Rothwell, applying for public hall licenses for tho Methodist Church : and schoolroom respectively for three months. Considerable discussion took place on Mr. Windram's letter 'as to tho dedication of land for ai chain road and a bridge" (to; bo constructed by tho Council), and also, a halfohaih road to a quarry) material from the quarry to be available to tho Council for five years in roturil for the same.' .A motion was carried to the effoefc. that' the original off or be not accepted. ; It was rosolved to ask tho Pptorie Borough Council to pay half of. The following remit was proposed by Councillor Ward: —That Parliament be asked to dofme reasonable .-limits of tho speed of motor-ears and cycles. Councillor Russell moved that Parliament be asked to promote, a Bill to , provide that only a ratepayer be eligible, to sit . as a Councillor or Mayor. . The resolution Was oarried. An open-air meeting in connection with tho No-Liconae movement was held-irt Jackson Street, Petone, 011 Saturday niglit. Tho speakers were Messrs. J. Dolahuilty, C. J.' Daniel, and T. Townsend. On the whole they woro accordtd a good hearing, but several young fellows, who had been drinking, were a. little rowdy. Muph fun was caused by ono, man mounting the box to spoak for the "other side." A sitting of the Petono Police Court was held yesterday before Messrs. W. Inglis and R, Mothes, J.P.'s. A young, man, Phillip Bond, was arrested yesterday at Ngahaurangu by Constable Murphy, and charged with stealing £2. Accused was convicted; and ordorcd to come up for sentence when called upon, and also to roturil tho stolon money. , . A Social and Athlotib Club was formed at tho Hutt last week. Tho ; Rev. F. B. Rothwoll was elected president, and Mr. S. P. Skinner hon. secretary and treasurer. Tho following wero appointed an Executivo Com-mitteo:—-Messrs. W. J. Parker, 11. B. Parker, G. Wood, R. Orr, 0. Johnson, and G. A.voon. Tho Club will provide physical, intellectual, and social recreation. Air. H. B. Parker has generously undertaken tho leadership of the gymnasium, which promises to bo ft very flourishing branch of tho work. The official opening will tako place oarly next month in tho Wesleyan School-
