CLAIM FOR SURPLUSES. OVER-CROWDING CAUSES MONEY MISTAKES, '{8T TELEGELLm—rEEES ASSOCIATION.) I Christchurch, May 23. A meeting of conductors and motormen in the service of the Christchurch Tramways Board is to bo held to-morrow to discuss certain grievances. The men. feel sore that an outsider should recently havo been appointed as inspector over their heads, while the conductors complain against tho abolition of the system hitherto obtaining under which any surplus casli they brought in after thoir day's work was placed to their credit as a set-off against shortages they may have incurred by giving wrong change. Several other grievances are also to bo discussed. ; Tho local tramway men are distinctly soro in regard to tho matter of tho surpluses and deficits on; the conductors' change. Thoir complaint is that the Tramways Board takes any surplus, whereas the individual conductors havo to mako up any deficit. Until recently tho one was balanced against the other, and tho men hold that, in fairness to them, this practice should bo.continued. MEETING OF THE MEN. '(BT' TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.!' Christchurch, May 24. At a mass meeting of tho tramway employees this morning it was resolved to send a deputation' to tho Board asking that an outside person recently appointed as ticket inspector over their heads bo retired, also, to request continuance of tho system until recently in vogue by .ivhich surplus moneys brought in by conductors should be placed to their credit, and used as a set-off against any subsequent deficiency. The Board recently decided to abolish tho system of crediting surpluses to conductors, and compelled the men to pay all deficiencies out of their own pockets. A resolution of sympathy was passed with tho Auckland tramway employees.
