(FROM OUIt SPECIAL COItRESrONDENTS ) I'ALMERSTON. SWIMMING BATHS PROPOSED. An enthusiastic public meeting was held on Friday to consider plans, etc., for the proposed municipal swimming baths. The meeting was unanimously in favour of tepid baths at a cost of £3500. A deputation was appointed to wait upon tho Council to urge it to raise a loan, and advocate that tho Council should grant a site behind the Opera House. Great enthusiasm was shown by prominent ratepayers, and there is every appearance of both the loan and site proposals being carried. Mr. Dickson, an old pioneer settler of Bunnythorpe, is seriously ill.
FEILDING.
The Manawatu A. and I'. Association has been well met by the. Wanganui Education Board. Tho winter holidays for all the schools in tho southern ward of this Education District will bo held during the Palmerston winter show week, and school. committees not in that part of the district are to be allowed to substitute show week for the usual holidays if they choose. Tho death took place at an early hour on Friday morning of Mr. Edward Ellison,, brewer, at his residence, Denbigh Street, Feilding. Deceased, who was 59 years of age, had been ailing for a considerable time. A- deputation representing the Ministers' Association'*and.the Women's Christian Temperance Union waited oil the Borough Council, and asked for the 1 closing of billiard saloons at 10 p.m., instead of 11 p.m. ; The request is to be considered. , Prices for stock keep below tho averago at the Apiti sales. The local secretary of the Farmers' Union has received word from the Minister for Lands that he (Mr. M'Nab) will attend the dinner to be given to tho delegates, attending tho Wellington Provincial Conference of tho Union in Feilding next Wednesday evening.
CARTERTON.
Empire Dat was celebrated' at tlio school on Friday, and, occasion was taken to present Private Seivers with tho silver medal for shooting ill the Wellington district, presented by the Education Department. The Mayor made tlio presentation, and appropriate speeches were delivered by His Worship tho Mayor and. Mr. W. C. Buchanan, member of the Education Board, and the Rev. Mr. Elliott. Thero was a fair attendance of. parents. The Rev. Mr. Elliott presided, in the absence of Mr.' Brown, chairman of the School Committee. The' cadets were in uniform, under Captain Talbot. Tho medal was competed for by representatives of 150 schools in the Wellington district.

:In the Council Chambers on Thursday afternoon, it was decided by the largo number of persons present to hold a town and country ball on. Juue-26 in the Town Hall. A large committee was set up, and Mr. Kent Johnston was appointed ■ secretary. Another meeting will .be held on Wednesday next.

, The local Y.M.C.A. is endeavouring to form a junior branch of the association, whereby boys from twelve years upwards -can be gathered together during the evenings, and treated to suitable and interesting lectures, and also receive instruction in the gymnasium. Tho idea should prove to bo. a very great benefit to : many. y6uthsi;in\'tlieir,teens who havo left school and find it difficult to spend their overlings except in idleness. . .Thero is a movement on foot in.Levin to form; a " boxing association, and those sportsmen who, are : interested in good, clean .sport are likely to call a meeting soon, with a view to forming an' association. Mr. J. G. Hankins has been interesting'himself in tho matter, arid, judging by his inquiries while he was in Wellington recently, ho. feels suro that there will be no very great difficulties in forming a strong club. Ono idea is to get a good instructor from one of the cities,: and procure, a billet for him in tha town, so'that he will always bo ! on hariil to assist the club in its workings. The idea seems to bo a very good ono. It is reported that several sportsmen (?) have been not only shooting over tho Horowhenua Lake—a Maori reserve —but have also very coolly helped themselves to any of the many boats that are moored in and around tho lake, without asking permission from anybody, and havo not had tho courtesy to return the boats to. their proper moorings, but have left them where it suited them best.

Mr. Stephens, Post Office Inspector, visited Shannon, on Thursday. , The Rev. Mr. Jolly, of Palmerston, North, ■presided at a social on Thursday night in the Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Mr. White, from Dunedin district, was accorded ' a welcome by the congregation.: The Rev. Mr. M'Caw,' Mr. White's predecessor, was presentedwith a travelling rug. In reply Mr. M'Caw: stated that he was very;: sorry to leave Levin and Shannon, but his bad •health compelled him to resign. Mr. Mail's, of the Foxton Methodist Church, also spoke and welcomed the 'new minister to the district. Mr. J., Murray, on ■ behalf of the ladies of- the congregation, presented Mrs. M'Pherson with a glove box, and Mr. Home presented Mr. M'Pherson with ait ink-stand on the occasion of his leaving the district to reside in Palmerston. Throughout tho evening songs were contributed by Mesdames Kew, Judd, and Miss Law, and tyy. Messrs. Rawle, Adsett, Schmidt, Law, and Ross." "

At the usual weekly Methodist- choir practice on Thursday night opportunity was taken of 'bidding good-bye to Miss M'Clcland, who is'leaving for Hawera, and presenting iier with a token of esteem, whicli took the form of a writing companion. The recipient has been a member of the choir for some years. A convivial evening'was afterwards spent.

•A meeting of the management committee of. t!io Gun Club was held in the secretary's office on Friday evening, Mr. 0. Burt in the chair. A credit balance of £17 7s. 3d. was reported, with a lot of cartridge money outstanding. The secretary was authorised to' procure a list of the outstanding amounts and proceed with their collection. Particulars of the Duncdin Gun Club's shoot wore received. Tho matter of arranging a date for tho noxt shoot w?.s held over. Tho British .footballers vera accorded a hearty ovation 1 as they passed through on their way to Mastertonon Friday evening., The Town Hall .improvements; have been completed, and liavo made an agreeable. alteration in the conveniences of the Hall for dances. The Hiucmoa Juvenile Entertainers, belonging to Papawai, entertained a fair audience in tho Town Hall on Friday lii^ht. The Featherston Ladies' Golf Clulf started the medal competition on Thursday, when tho not score on tho best cards handed in read:—Mrs. W. Toogood, 81; Mrs. C. J. Lucas, 82: and Mrp.-H; Wickens, 80. , Tho Pata Koura Hockey Club played a drawn game—ito score—at Mastcrton on Thursday against tho Glengarry team. .At Carterton on Thursday the Liberal juniors defeated tho Mastertoii Albions by eight points to six. Tho game was an interesting struggle. Mr. V. L; Fairbrother was referee. The balance-sheet to bo presented to the parishioners' meeting of St. John's Church this evening shows a credit balance of £73 Is. 10d., as against £84 7s. 9d. last year.
