Two chimney fires, one in Franklin Avenuo and the other -in College Street, were responsible for calling out.the Fire Brigade at 6.37 and 7.23 o'clock last evening.
Mr. Justice Coopor will leave Wellington on circuit business this morning. His Honour sits at Wanganui on May 26, Palmerston North on June 9, and Napier on Juno 22.
Tho date of tho annual Garrison ball has been definitely fixed for June 24. The function will bo held in tho new Garrison.Hall in Buckle Stroet, and the adjoining Artillery Drill Hall will bo used as a supper-room.
The Now Zealand Express Company has secured permission to erect in' Dunedin a seven-story building in ferro-ooncrete. The sito is in Bond Stipet, stretching through to Crawford Street.
It has bean stated that the aid Drill Hall is to be converted into an agricultural museum, but nothing was said at the tdme ns to whether a now building is to be erected or not. Last night the Premier informed a Dominion representative that it was not intended to erect any new building at present.

The Customs revenue collected at Wellington yesterday amounted to £2339 16s. 3d.
Tho next sitting of the Bankruptcy Court, which is fixed for Monday, will probably be postponed, owing to the fact that Mr. Justice Chapman will bo engaged in connection with the hearing of criminal cases in the Supreme Court.

The banks and law offices will close, but the shopkeepers have decided to keep open, and observe the usual half-holiday on Wednesday, which happens to bo the date of the British-Wellington football match. Tho results of the limorick competition held by Messrs. Kirkcaldie and Stains, Ltd., in connection with their May Fair; are now to hand. Count Grunelius, of Frankfort, Germany, who has just left for Sydney after a tour of tho Dominion, has expressed himself as delighted with all ho has. seen ! in Now Zealand. Ho and tho ladies of his party were very enthusiastic over tho scenic glories of tho Wanganui River, and in tho thermal regions no place proved more attractive to them than wonderful' Wairakei. Count Grunelius goes away with tho firm determination of returning again to New Zealand to make a longer stay than ho was able to make on. his recent trip.
