POLITICAL REFORM LEAGUE
The' annual meeting of the Pukekoho branch of the Political Reform League was hold 1 in tho Masonic Hall, Pukekohe, on the evening of May 16. The balance-sheet presented- the'secretary and treasurer shov/ed. that, during the-year the sum of £201 was expended, tho receipts from all. sources being £212, leaving a credit balance of £11. In tho report on tho year's work it was shown, that the roll number of members had risen', from 180 to 214, but owing to deaths and -..departures;, had again fallen ..to 190. After a discussion on the report, the following officers were elected: —President, Mr. J. Schlaopler j vice-presidents, Messrs Shepherd, Bilkoy, Rutherford, and Potter; secretary and- treasurer, _Mr. H. H. D. Wily.; and a committee of eight ladies and twelve gentlemen. -Hearty votes of thanks were tendered to tho president and secretary, and to the ladies to whom so much of the success of tho socials and garden party were' due. A telegram was received from Mr. W. F. Massoy, Leader of. tho Opposition, thanking the members of tho League, on behalf of the Opposition party, for their splendid services during <§ho year, and wishing them every success in tho-future.
A now and interesting addition to the aquarium at Opawa has recently been mado says tho Ghristchurch; •" Press " by tho importation of a number of Japanese fish, including tho raro and beautiful paradise fish, and tho prolific-minnow-which swarms in all thai rice fields ,in Japan. As tho food of this fish consists of the eggs of mosquitoes it is much prizbd, and largo numbers havo been sent 'to .Italy for into the swamps, whilst , every Gorman stcamor now takes a supply of these" little mosquito-eat-ing fishj'for New, Zealand-thoy . will doubtless also prove a-valuable food for trout, and on account of their active habits and pretty blue oyes will bo an interesting object for aquariums. The total number of all varieties' in tho shipment amounted to several hundreds yet not it single loss, accurred on the voyage, special cans having beou furnished. -Tho fish aro at present too small for turning out, but are' thriving .well 011 their new food, the ■ fresh water pules, or jlea.
