1 Almost any joko that is against tho police is welcomed by the general public, but the members of the force itself at times are not averse to making statements that, boome-rang-like, tell against themselves. This was apparent at the Magistrate's Court yesterday, says the "Lyttelton Times," when a constable who was giving evidence stated that while ho and his companion, another constable, were making inquiries about two women, they got away down the street, but had been arrested some timo later. Mr. Leatham, \vlio was appearing in tho case, asked the witness how it was that two women could got away from them, and why the two policemen not gone after them at onco.
