ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
DEATH OF. A COACH-DRIVER. Tlio circumstances .surrounding the death of Abel Kerr, coach-driver, Mastcrton, woro inquired into on Tuesday. , Deceased, it will be remembered, ■ succumbed to injuries received as a result of coming into contact with a verandah, and being thrown to tilo ground, whilst driving the MastcrtoiirHomowood coach, the team in which had got out of control. He was an experienced/driver, and at tho time was diverting the team into Bruco Street, owing to. tho| fact that tlicro was a good deal;of vehicular traffic ahead in Queen Street.
A verdict that death was duo to internal injuries received by falling from a br'ako,- of which he had charge, was returned.
SUICIDE OF A CLERK. An inquest on the body of Edward Torranco Meredith, a clerk, nineteen years ''or age, was held at Upper Plains by Mr. W. P. James, S;M. (coroner), 011 Wednesday. Evidence was tendered to the effect that tho deceased had been despondent for some .(lays. On tho advieo of his medical adviser he 'intended/to leave on Wednesday 'morning on an extended holiday to the-East Coast. After indulging in a gome of cards with his aunts on Tuesday ovening 110 went to the bathroom about 10.15 p.m., presumably to liavo a bath. Shortly afterwards tho, noise caused by a cartridge exploding was heard, and upon tho room being entered deceased was found dead with a rifle lying beside him. There was a wound in his neck and chin, and tho bullet was afterwards found embedded in tho ceiling. Tho jury returned a verdict that d,eath was' due to a gunshot wound self inflicted whilst deceased was temporarily insane. ' An inquest was : held yesterday by Dr. M'Arthur, S.M., on tho body of Mrs. ; Paul Hoskins, ail old and highly-esteemed resident, who expired suddenly, whilst preparing tea, -on Wednesday evening. • Medical evidence showed that death had been occasioned iiy heart disease, antl a verdict was returned accordingly.
