Auckland lias lately given-rise to some advorsp. criticism on the part of mer-/ chants, and; shipping 'representatives. Tho principal matter at which tho criticism is directed is tho alleged lack of sufficient depth of water,'at,either tho Queen Street or tho Railway Wharf, to large ocean-going vessels, such as-tho 'steamers; of tho White Star or tho Shaw, Savill lines, to uso tho 'port to-tho fullest advantage. Tho. critics stated that whereas, tho maximum dojrths noiv obtainable at tlio Queen Street and Railway Wharves are only 27ft. Tin. and 25ft. respectively, it .is nee'essafy, in order to place tho port oil even terms with Wellington,: that provision should bo made for'', vessels' drawing several .feet.more than is now. available: 'It is pointed out that at tho Glasgow .Wharf at •Wellington, from which tlio dairy produce is shipped, a.dopth.of 32ft. Gin. is obtainable, ahd it js urged that, an equal depth should be provided at Auckland before tho largo vessols can bo'expcctcd to malto Auckland their final .loading port. Tho, critics state that the Harbour BoardV present dredging plant-is quite; imulcqnat-p to copo with tho vast amount of dredging work which is required to be dono. This fact,, however, has not - been lost sight of by tho' Board, .which has decided to obtain two. new dredges of tho latest pattern— one a'-.suction.dredger.and tlio other a laddcrdrodger.. 1 . . Tlio Cliaifman •of tlio Board (Hon. E. Mitclielsou),- who was soon on tho subject, states that when tlio new machinery, now on iorder, is obtained; tlio Board will bo possessed of a plant capablo of doing all that will bo required.
