'is ruling for New Zealand'hemp •on spot ; and; for April-June shipment; ; and this is important. It indicates that the prospects for the fibre are better in tho future than they are at present. As long ago as March 1 we ventured to predict that hemp would risean r'April, and tne reasons for the opinions expressed were 'given fully. The hemp market; is.not one I ,,that lends itself to safe prediction, at least not' just now, but notwithstanding that factiwe'are inclined to the t belief' that millers will see the London quotation at ;>.£23 .before the middle of next month. There may be a slight after that with a possible recovery in July. When 'wo. predicted the present advance we stated that as soon as tlie Americans had met . . their pending financial : obligations, forced Balling of.; Manila ' hemp would . ecase,.and values would therefore advance., .The conditions to-day . appear; to be somewhat,'changed. It seems to us that the makers of binder twine foresee a more extensive wheat acreage, and are now preparing for an increased ac- , mand of. binder twine, or \it .. might be • that .supplies of Manila are ' expected •to show a , shrinkage during tlio next three' months, and contracts are being made for the New Zealand fibre. If the price touches £2i and re- ' mains at that for somo time millers will have : no cause of complaint, for that price would leave them with a fair, margin of profit. 1 At tho present quotation of ,£26 10s. .the work- . ing costs and royalties can be met, but there is nothing left for contingencies or for tho millers'. profit. ; ; SERVICE BETWEEN AUSTRALIA AND ■ JAPAN. . . . According to recent mail advices the negotiations between' tho North German Lloyd Steamship Company and tho Imperial Government for the subsidy for the maintenance of a Regular mail service between New Guinea, Australia and Japan have been concluded. The existing mbsidy treaty, concluded for tho years 18954914, -for-the establishment • of mail lines to the Far East and Australia, provided for a connecting lino from Singapore to New Guinea and back* via "the ports of tho Sunda Archipelago. •'This' AustraliaJapan line, however, was not a financial success; but, on the.other hand,t a thriving trade with New Guinea; with an . important copra export as well as an 'import of .workmen and ' beasts of burden "from; Singapore, together with the excellent port conditions at Simpsonshafen, made a regular connection with Singapore desirable. Therefore it has been decided to resume the New Guinea-Singapore .' route, with tho inclusion of a number'of newports of call. ' . The North German Lloyd Company . accordingly establish a regular monthly service between' Sydney; New Guinea, Hong Kong and , Japan, receiving as tho result of the negotiations just concluded an additional subvention of 560,000 marks (<£25,000) yearly. The new line also, calls at the i , Island of Yap, the terminal of the GermanDutch cable. The withdrawal of Japanese competition as the result of the North German Lloyd Company's agreement with the Nippon Yusen Xaislia is probably , tho dc- . tcrmining factor of the new, venture. , , ' BREWERS' LICENSES. , \ In connection with the Licensing Bill, introduced into the Imperial Parliament, a return has been issued detailing statistics of tho production of beer, licenses held, and other interesting matter. Holders! however, are firm, and are not disposed to accept prices less than they are now getting. In consequence, no business is doing. Oats are firm, at a slight advance on last week's prices. This is especially noticeable in Gartons, for which there is a demand for export, both to the North Island and to Australia. Of potatoes the market has been bare, and there was an improved demand to-day. Up-to-dates sold at £1 ss. per ton, and Derwents up to M 10s. TRADE BETWEEN NORTH AND , SOUTH. ;■ — —9— —— ■ BETTER STEAMER SERVICE WANTED. IBY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Auohjand, April 13. The message from Duncdin regarding the inadequate steamer service between the South and-the North has been keenly discusscd'in local mercantile circles, the general opinion being that both the travelling public and thomerchants had a very just causo for- complaint. . In conversation with a "Herald" reporter, a well-known Auckland merchant expressed the opinion that the present service with two boats a week between Auckland and Dunedin, via the East Coast, was very much behind the, times. During the past few months, and more especially during the holiday seaison, ho said, passengers had to be content to take whatever accommodation was offered, the steamers being at times so ovorcrowdea that travellers had to sleep on the'floors in the saloon, smoking room, and steerage, and' at times even the tables had to bo brought into requisition. Tho steamers of both companies running on the service were in the same position for want of accommodation. "This certainly should not be permitted," said., the merchant, "arid it is to'be hoped that before long the companies will come to a sense of tboir responsibilities to the travelling public. The matter can easily' bo' got over by placing another steamer on the service, giving us throe boats a week instead of two as at present. I .think that very strong representations should be made by the Chamber of Commerce, as representing tho 'interests of both the Union Steam Ship Company and the Huddart Parker Company, on the matter, so that by next season travellers will not have to put up with the past inconvenience. The trade of Auckland is such now as to demand the .services of a third steamer weekly from Auckland to Dunedin, via way ports, and I trust that the matter will be strongly _ taken up, and the' companies urged that it is in their best interests to extend tho service." MASTERTON NEWS. _e . (FROM OCR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.) At a meeting held at Masterton lasi; night of tho public interested in the development of the Mauriceville coal measures, several experienced miners were present, and also proporty-owners on whose places tho coal has been discovered. 'Action was deferred until further information is: to hand regarding the cost of drills, etc. A meeting of tho stewards of tho Racing Club was held on Saturday > afternoon, when the profit on the last meeting was reported to be £131. Tho question of improvements to the' course was referred to a committee. There was some talk of tho club endeavouring to arrange with the A. and P. Association regarding a course at Solway. There was a crowded attendance at tho Knox Sunday School anniversary services last night. Messrs.
