4 WELLINGTON DRAWS WITH HAWKE'S ' BAY. FINE INNINGS BY HICKSON. (BY TELEGnAm —PRESS ASSOCIATION. ) Napier, April 4. Tho Wellington-Hawke's Bay cricket match was continued to-day, and resulted in a draw, Wellington requiring 37 to win, with two wickets to fall, at tho call of time. Bailey and Cato I 'resumed Hawke's Bay's second innings to the bowling of Monaghan and Brice. Both batsmen wero hitting freely and with confidence, hut tho fielding was good, and runs came but slowly. With tho score at 32, Patrick took the ball from Monaghan, and five runs later Tucker relieved Brice. The change did not alfcct the partnership, and at 50 Hickson replaced Patrick, and with his third ball took Bailey's wicket. 51—5—26. The Hawke's. Bay colt had put on 26 in nice style. Lusk was tho next mail in, but, was given out, 1.b.w., to. his first ball from Hiekson. Macassey followed, and Brice took Tucker's place at the bowling crease. Monaghan soon after went on again in place of Hickson,. and 'immedintcly afterwards Macassey was run out. 60—7—2. Hawke joined Cato, who was playing lively cricket, and scoring freely. At 70 Hickson again went on in place of Brice. The frequent changes in the bowling, however, had no effect for some time, but at 97 Cato was caught by Monaghan off Tucker, and retired with a well-played 40 to his credit. 97-8-40. Fulton followed, but Hawke was immediately afterwards caught by Hickson off Brice. 97 —9 —13. . Fenton was last man, and despite an injured hand ho snicked a few beforo Fulton was caught by Tucker off Cobcroft. .102 — M-l. • ; VISITORS'.SECOND INNINGS..' Wellington began their second innings immediately; after the' luncheon adjournment) 1 , with 231 to makoi to win. ' Hickson and Beechey opened'to tho-'bowling of Luslc and Macassey. Grant fielded as a substitute for Fenton. In his second over Lusk clean 'bowled Beechey. S—l—s. _ i Tucker "filled the gap, and. with Hickson began to freely,. 30 appearing on tho board for twenty minutes' play. At' 33 Tucker was caught and bowled by Macassey. 33-2—19. Patrick was next man. At 40 Dalgleish replaced Macassey, but fast scoring continued, and 50 went up for twenty-five mill-, ut-es' , play. Six runs later Lusk clean bowled Patrick. 56—3—13. Brice came next, and White replaced Lusk in .tho bowling. Rims' still continued to como steadily, though tho bowling and fielding allowed very few liberties to bo taken. At 78. Dalgleish changed ends, and Macassey came on again at tho opposite end.- When Brice had scored 13 lie was missed by Fulton off Dalgleish, but a few runs later he was smartly caught by Bailey at mid-on off the same bowler. 90—4—IS. . .GETTING INTERESTING., Wynyard succeeded Brice, and at 96 Fulton went- on in Dalgleish's 1 place. The century appeared for an hour and forty _ minutes' play, and the game became very interesting, as Wellington had 121 to get to win and an hour and thirty-five minutes in which 'to do it. A draw seemed probablo unless Wellington' attempted a forcing game, in which case it was impossiblo to say how tho game,-would go., ■•' , ■ White took the ball from Macassey, but, aftor three overs, Dalgleish replaced him. -At thojaftornoon tea .adjournment, .123 was registered, and Hickson. had reached his halfcentury. On resuming, Lusk took Fulto, ll ' 3 place. In Dalgleish's next over ho clean bowled Wynyard. -127—5—11. . ' '•'. ' Monaghan followed, but, after a short stay, Dalgleish good one past him,' 141—7—9. Tilyard filled the vacancy, and hit Lusk for 4 with his. first stroke, but a few runs, later ho, too, fell a victim to Dalgleish. 153 —7—9. LIGHT-BAD—A CAUTIOUS FINISH. Cobcroft .then joined Hickson,. and a. period of careful play 'followed, neither batsman being''disposed to tako any chances, especially as the Hawke's BaV fielding was particularly smart and accurate.Y At 170, Macassey went on again, and Dalgleish replaced Lusk at the other end. ; The light was now failing, and both batsmen were playing with the utmost care.' >' .. . At 182, Cobcroft ..was. brilliantly caught in tho slips by Lusk /; off Dalgleish.; Bruce was next, and'with Hickson pjayed, out time, tho scoro standing at 194 for- eight wickets when time was callcd, Hicksori; being, not out with a splendidly played'B7.
