In reply to Mr. Mair, the iiiterpreter sentby Goncral Cameron, K.'C.B.', to inform tliern that their pa was sapped, .and that unless they surrendered they would bo, all bldwn up they said that they would never, never surrender, and would all die together, rather than give lip their women .and children. Tho losses were heavy on both sides. -Tlio Maoris.had-about.. seventy-;killed and forty wounded. On our side we lost' the gallant Captain Ring, of tlio 18th "Royal Irish, who was mortally wounded-on March 31 j and died ou April 2. His remains were buried iii the Anglican Cemetery in Symonds. Street, and a monument was erected over hisgravo by tho officers, non-commissioned officers, and men of his oorps. Major Hereford; of the Militia, also lost his life, whilst gallantly leading'his mod. I believe this-was the first time that the Imperial and Colonial troops fought in a general engagement: together." . . . .
