Mr. P. S. Laurie, superintendent of the Koe Guam Steamship Co., Penang, arrived from Sydney by the Maheno, accompanied by Mrs. Laurie, who ,is a daughter of Mr. S. Gilmer, of the Royal Oak Hotel. Mr. Laurio has been in poor health for some time, and has just returned from a holiday trijj to Great. Britain, making a short stay at Penang on his way, out. His health has greatly improved, but he will probably remain .in New Zealand for several months. '. .' :

Mr. Jaines Mitchell, one of the oldest,settlers in Wellington- (aftor whom Mitchelltown, at the head of Polhill Gully, is named), died between 8 afad 9 o'clock yesterday morning. Mr; Mitchell arrived in Wellington with his parents in the ship Gertrude in 1841, and he and his two brothers, Mr. Henry Mitchcll, still a resident of Wellington, and Mr. William Mitchell, who died sis years ago, fettled in the wilds of Polhill Gully, wliprtf they carried on the business of brickmajdng, and it was from their bricks that of tho earliest buildings ,in Wellington wero constructed. Mr. James ?U%cliell subsequently retired from theJtfSsiness,. aiid went' in for farming at Ta?:?. Fiat, an employment which ho' soon /abandoned, and, returning to town, inpJiH-itnd a carrying business,'which'he conducted until somo ten years ago. Ho had been ailing somo time, and finally succumbed to an attack of bronchitis, brought on by the recent sudden change from 'mid-summer weather to that usually associated'with midwinter. Deceased' was eighty-five years of ago. Mr. Mitchell left a family of four sons and three daughters. Two of tho sons are in Oamaru, anothor is in Wellington, and another in Ashburton.- The daughters are Mrs. H. Frico, of Upper Willis Street; Mrs. W. J. Williams, of Karaka Bay; and Mrs. Greig, of Falmorston North. At tho anniversary meeting of the Donald M'Lean Street Primitive Methodist Sunday School last evening, the Rev. J. Dawson and other speakers referred to tho great services to tho denomination of Mr. Mitchell, who was one of, tile fathers iof the church.

Justice Chapman returned to Wellington from Nolson j'esterday. Mr. F. Y. Lethbridge, M.P., of Feilding, paid a visit to Wellington yesterday. Mr. -T. Hamer, Under-Secretary for the Mines Department, roturned from Australia by the Maheno yesterday. Dr. Vahntine, Inspector-General 'of Hospitals; has left on a visit to Christchurck. He •is expected back about Monday. Capt. T; W. M'Donald, Adjutant of the Forces for the Wellington District, returned from an extended ; visit to Tasmania (his native place) and Australia by the Maheno yesterday. . \ Mr. W.
