HOW THEY EVADE THE LAW; When the steamer Charon arrived at Fremantle from Singapore recently, the presence of Chinese was suspected, but a rigorous soarch failed. to reveal. any. Subsequently, ; when the vessel returned .to Geralaton,. a Chinese was arrested, and as he could not pass .the education ,test lio was sentenced to three months' imprisonment and ordered_ to bo doported. In prosecuting his inquiries, Customs Officer Smith, of Fremantle, mado some interesting discoveries. . He found thqt tho Chineso boarded the Charon ait Singapore with four'of his countrymen,'who desired'to land in Australia. They were concealed during the whole voyago in the bilges under the engine-room floor in ail .extremely cramped; position. 'He also learnt, that Ah Wan had paid lOOdol. to'a Chinese fireman to take him on board-and find him a hidins -placo. On. .the .voyage down a fireman, induced Ah Wan to cut off his pigtail,; so that lie might' have no difficulty in landing at Fremantle. : All Wan's three companions,, who were concealed with him, successfully evaded the Customs' officers and water police, and effected a landing, at Fremantle. All Wan Was too ill to mako an attempt to.land, and had to start on the return,journey, with the result stated.
