One of the horses held a' short lead of another, and in tlio run homo evidently had the raco in hand, when it is alleged the rider of. the losing horse stood up in his Btirrups and dealt tho other man a heavy blow' on tho head with tho butt-end of his whip, which was mounted with',a brass knob. The injured man stuck to his mount, and brought her to victory, though tho outpouring blood almost blinded him. On dismounting, ho was found to have two gashes in tho head just above tho templo. Tho stewards wished to disqualify the offender for thrco years, but at tho request tho other jockey they debarred him only for tho remainder of tho meeting.
