TWO UNFORTUNATE CHILDREN.

Two orphan children of tho lato Mr. J. H. Hammersley—a boy of fifteen and a girl of thirteen—havo had an experience that has probably never fallen, to tho lot of any other boy or girl. While presiding over a dinner for newsboys in New iiork last month, given at tho" suggestion of their, guardian, they were told that they havo inherited £10,000,000 each. In accordance with the will of their fathor, who died seven years ago, the children havo been brought up in complete ignoranco of their great wealth. The servants employed to look after them were warned that they would bo instantly dismissed if any of. them mentioned tho subject. Tho children havo led very simple lives, their clothes and food being of tho plainest. Their father left detailed instructions regarding their daily life, which show that ho believed in tho nioro rigid upbringing of children, as practised two or three generations ago. AVliilo permitted all kinds of healthful exercisa and amusements, the children havo never been allowed to come into contact with anyono who might, toll them of the property they will somo day possess. They will not only, inherit .their father's largo fortune, but also tho fortune of their uncle, Mr. L. G. Hammersley. who left, only, a life interest to his widow, formerly Lily Duchess of Marlborough, who' is nmv tho widow of Lord William Beresford, V.C.
