The King, who had' placed bis gun on the ground, was fortunately ablo to spring aside, and the Duke of ; Tarancon, with great promptitude, shot the animal dead. Alfonso.'bears, a' charmed life. . iHo' has had many remarkable \escapos . from death, including four deliberate attempts tq tako his life., When a boy ho was attacked in the streets' of Madrid by a ruffian armed with .a'.knife, but escaped uninjured. Two shots wero fired at him on Juno 11, 1903, in Madrid,' wliilo driving homo from church, accompanied, by his mother and sister. Both shots missedJum. During his visit, to Paris in June, 1905,- a. bomb was thrown at him as lie was returning from tlio opera with President Loubet. Two horses wero killed, but tlio King escaped again unhurt. . -The fourth attempt was mado on May 30, 1006, during his wedding festivities in Madrid. He was driving through tho streets with his brido' when a bomb'was thrown a.t tho royal cai'r riago. Twelve pebplo wero killed and many others' were injured; but tho royal pair es-: caped. The King has had many other osoapes, largely due to his motoring exploits.:' ■
