RENTS REMITTED. ■' The Tawaha Government settlers between Featherston and Martinborough had a very bad run in thoir first ycar (writos our Wairarapa correspondent); ■ They - were- 'placed upon sections which were, admittedly highly priced, and just as they had commenced work .in earnest,, and were stocking their land arid erecting their buildings, the May floods of last year gavo them a tremendous set-back. Later, the. settlement was affected . by drought,- and thp residents then petitioned the Minister , for Lands for help. : It is .hardly probable' that help' would have, been ■required had it; not been. for : 'tho' damage caused by ; the floods, because'the Tawaha flats possess the niost prolific soil in the AVairarapa?/'Clover grows several f?et. high . on Tawaha when it is only several,,inches'.high ■in partejipf-r.the; .dlst-r,iot;t''Sow-ever,^;thq fact :that a series* of troubles beset : tho farmers was fully considered by .the Land Board, which- recommended- a -year's ' remission of rent; This remissioii .has now been : agreed to by tho Government; The - a mount' involved, is about'£lßoo,' and .this rebate is ; spread among twenty settlers."
