Then were-aboutJnine. of the: leading men, namely .Captain Coll6ttj .Sorgt*.-Major Evans, Riflemen Bairst-ow,; Kitchen; Hyde, Carlson, W Randell,. Lieutenant Timbrolljarid Sergoanl Edwards (of Australia), who , were al! thought to have a chance of finishing ■ uj: with a clear: lead before the final matcil fot Championship honours to, bo fired this, after noon. Captain; .Collett. and Sergeant-Majjjj Evans, who .had last. night' at the head of the leading aggregates with aggregate scores of 576 and 372 respectively, were slightly better -favourites ' than .tho others, but there were many who pinned their faith to \ consistent shots like Riflemen Hyde ;and N Randell, while not a few fully expected Sergeant Edwards, tho Australian, to be well in at the death. Rifleman Bairstow, who has shot ■,very consistently,, and also Lieutenant Timbrell, wore not without .their, ad mirers, and altogether, as events progressed during the morning, the situation simmered with suppressed excitement. ; ,There was a . slight fo£ in the early morning, ibut . this cleared away some^,little time before firing commenced, and when .the men ■ settled down .tho day was calm, with a fairly good, light.; ,:Hydo (3C2)j v who .was. tho .first among the leading mon to firo,; mado a solid score of 39. ..His sighter was 1 a miss, but he followed this up with an . outer, a magpij. and a bull, ..then' an inner. and two bul's, then another ; .inner' and another two bulls, and finished with two magpies. .This made his Grand Aggregate, .to date, .401. Kitchen, with a lead :of-four points abovo Hyde, star ted well. His lighter wis an inncr; then ho put in four consecutive bulls, following with an inner. Ho lost ground then- with three outers, picked 'himself up a-bit with a magpie, and .then.'.fell right- away, missing the target altogether.. His aggregate read 399 Serge'ant-Majbr.-Evans -(372), who -was ;tlio second in the ; previous 'list of leading aggrer gates,.'had:a'.-'very bad. run, owing : tp-a most baffling His score of' 23 was mado'up of one bull, six outers, two magpies, and a miss.'' The' wind t -wasnow getting' much worso than .in the' darlier -stages of tho firing, and : opinion was generally expressed-that, if any ,of, those ,leading , failed ,t? hold their previous • adyantagp,r;it,-Tvbuld ; b'o' hard luck, >ut at tho- s'anio time it'would make the final the\mo^6' iriterestirig to-day. ; The; results show that. ,th©., leading men , of last night, with hardly; an exception,, failed to improvo their relative positions to- any extent. Captain Collott;; (376), \vho was at the head of the '■'list ' last night, . finished.'. 1 - up with a brilliaiit' scorq of 46' at 900 yard? in tho Canterbury Match, was -'tha greatest sufferer. He was shooting almost midway along the' mound, and to add to. his other difficulties there , was a breeze blowing;;Ho'-: started- .with a miss as a sighter; ■ tlien/ui two; followed by a three. His' next {shbt was, a miss, which, he. chal- | leriged unsuccessfully. In the next two shots he ; never -..hit -'tile,: target— Seven hits in six shots.- In his succeeding l shot ho registered a bull; then a,miss and two "twos," finishing with a score of 16 for his ten shots. . His total road 392, Lieutenant Timbrell was partly fortunate and partly, unfortunate. His sighter was a richochot;; then; he '.-missed' the target twice in A deep gloom settled upon the countenances of his friends, when lie suddenly electrified, them by steadily potting the bulFs-eye ; :_ih; : seven consecutive shots. He finished ...with'.-a' -miss, • his aggregate then being 399, level .with Kitchen and 2 points behind 'Hyde.,. Rifleman W: ,Randell shot jmore consistently than the others, although 'after a'sighter of: 4,-he began with a ltiiss. Ho followed with 'two bulls,, 3, and two ,4's, two. bulls again, a 3, and another bull. This brought his range total to 39, and his grand aggregate to '452—one more than Hyde—thus attaining the Honour of being the leading shot of the "King's Fifty, " who are to go down to-day' ; to contest, tho New Zealand Riflo Championship for 1908., . '' Bairstow, who mth Hyde carries tlio hopes of Wairarapa, was 368 when he went down on tho mound. Hp was almost in tho.centro of the field. The wind was tricky and rain was falling in a summer : drizzle.' His sighter. was ah-outer, and then his first shot an inner. Wairarapa Riflo Championship stock fell somewhat when in the next three shots he scored two misses and a three. Then ho added two inners and a two, and, finally, lie wound up with two 4's and a bull—a vory good recovery. His total was 30, and his aggregate .398, fifth on.the list. '.Sergeant.: Edwards,' tho "Australian, was the,man whom many thought would rise up from the mound the leader of tho wholo fifty.'. Ho fired about noon, when the light was particularly bad,' and his' every movement was 6ho of extreme caution. A big crowd collected l'ound his scoring board,, and conversation was conducted in-whispers. The riflemen were interested, because they know the redoubtable; Australian was quite capableooff f finishing in the lead, and although thejr did- not wish , him to leave the Dominion with the ohampion belt hanging round w. shouMerSj they saw. .'that he had ■ a. fair
run for his' money. . The Australian commenced with, a bull-sighter, following with, a wo and a threo. In his third shot lie missed the target altogether, and then added a bull, a two, and a three, followed by a bull, nil inner, a second bull/and a three; total 32; grand aggregate 396.- • - Carlson,; who commenced with the same aggregate ias Sergeant; Edwards, namely 364, was gather unfortunate. He opened with an ojiter as a sighter, and then ."registered a miss, followed by a three, 1 a bull, and two 2 s. ■ He then added two splendid bull'soyos, but j lost ground immediately afterwards, with a miss and an'outer. His last shot was a magpie, the score reading 27, making his aggregate 391. As matters now stand tho Championship is practically an open contest. Randell, tho leading mail, is only a point ahead of Hyde; who m turn is but two points in advance of limbroll-and Kitchen. Bairstow is a joint behind thtse two, while Dippie, who,! made go at tho 1000 yards,. bringing his aggregate up to 396, is two points behind Bairstow. 'T P vans ls ' a PP'nt behiiid: Dippie. In addition there-are others close up who may shntcli:the victory, iii the deciding shots. In last year's Championship A. Ballin'ger started for the King's Prize with., a fiveponit _ cleat - lead froni Pur noil, his total, being »19, and ho. finished eight points to tho ?ri "J' sc °rmg 42, .'his aggregate .' reading 461. Colour-Sergeant Duncan, of Dennistoil, was second on tho list with '453, Sergeant Drmnmond,.of Dannevirke, third with 451,. and Sergeant Mills, of Dunediii, fourth with "447. j. I the contestants.
