SCENES AT A NEW YORK FIRE.
THREE FIREMEN KILLED. block of buildings .of 13 floors fronting Fifth Avenue' and .Nineteenth Stroet was, on January 11, tho scbrio of a disastrous fire, which.' kept the brigade at work for soma hours,.and which was not finally extinguished before three firemen had lost their lives and several others had been, severely injured. Vasts! crowds of spectators gathered on tho spot and .watched tho brigado at work, and many sensational incidents were witnessed. The pcoplo. in,;tho..numerous hotels in cho'neighbour-hood-of. the scene of tho outbreak flocked excitedly into tho streets, fearing'every moment that tho flames would Epread across tho intervening space'and set firo to other buildings in' tjio vieinity.- Ono, by-one tho peoplo wero rescued from the building,-mostly*by: means of a;,specially long firo escape, but it was found' '-impossible.to. reach.'a number of printers who were'at'work, on, the twelfth floor, and who, on i'tho 'outbreak of tho liro low down in tho buildings found their cscapo completely cut fieroo.wero the flames that tho fire-, merij'.could not. get 'a ladder to the window, and' it.seernood that tho men's fato was sealed; -Eventually, however, '.; it. was decided to.. at-tempt'a-rescue by means of, a line thrown across from a window on tho opposite side of 'tho-road, and after several unsuccessful attempts had been made, a stout weighted lino •wis; thrown into tho room, in which tho un-, fortunate men were imprisoned, and mado fast at eao'a end.
