FIRES IN THE CITY.

A fire in a six-roomed two-story dwelling in No. 13 Victoria Place engaged tho attention of the Fira Brigade at 9.20 yesterday morning. The brigade had considerable difficulty in reaching tin. house, several intervening fences having to .bo broken down. .Two bedrooms arid-their contents on tho upper floor wero destroyed bv the flames, and tho. rest of the house an:t its contents suffered from smoko and water. The building, which was owned by Mr. G: Williams, of Taranaki, Street, was occupied l'v Mrs. IC.Tmrie. it .was insured in tho' Commercial'JJnion.-for'Jß2oo. Tlio contents wero uninsured.

. At 8.49 p.m., a call was received to a, boardingliouse, No. 31 Taranaki Place, occupied by Mr. M. Conva.v and owned by Mr. T. Carmichael.' The outbreak turned out to be in two fibre mattresses in the .yard at the rear of tlio dwelling. The firo was Smothered by the use of chemicals. A third call was received at 9.21 from 11 Devon Street, where a house, occupied by Mr. Alex. Simpson, and owned bv Mr. Wni. .Adams, was in danger of destruction. The outbreak was confine! to .a .wooden wardrobe, built into a wall, of a bedroom on the first 'floor, the flames being extinguished by tho aid of buckets if water, after the wardrobe and its contents had been severely damaged;
