Mr. JamoS Kowin, representative of the. well-known English firm of.. Lovell and Christmas, arrived in Wellington by the Arawa yesterday, this timo not solely on business bent. Mr. Kowin was married just beforo ho left London, and ho has brought Mrs.'Kowin to Now Zealand with,him. Mr. J. Stout and Mr. Olaf Stout leave by v tiio Moeralvi on Friday for a year's trip to England and tho Continent. Captain Johnson, tho Wellington Harbourmaster, has been granted , seven weeks' leave of absence in order to visit Australia. Christchurch today. The Minister celebrated tho twelfth anniversary of his appointment .as a Minister on Satyrday last, Tho late Mr.' Edward Alfred Drury, who died .in his sixty-third year on Monday night, was.a Maori War veteran. Ho served under ■ Lieut.-General Cameron, Major Gallaway, and Lieut.-General Bal Nevis, in 1862. and 1863,. in the Xo. 1 Royal Company Auckland Riflo Volunteers. Yesterday afternoon at the Railway Offices, Featherston Street, Mr. John Coom, who is retiring after, thirty-two years' Government service, from tho position of Chief Engineer, v Maintenance Branch, was presented with bis portrait in oils:: This portrait was tho out--come of a i wish on, the part of Mr.' Coom's brother officers to show their, kindly regard for him. Mr. T. Ronayne, General Manager, made • the presentation,' aiid .Mr. .Coom expressed his appreciation of. tho . kindness which had prompted the gift. " Tho Rev. C. W. Maclaverty, who has boon for seven years curate of St. Peter's Church, . and is leaving on Saturday' on a visit to England, was-presented last evening, on behalf of the parishioners,. with' a purso of sovoreigns. Mr. Grease, churchwarden, mado the presentation, and,' in doing so, referred to ,the very .high esteem in which Mr, Mac-, laverty is'hold in the! parish. . The Rev. G.
