WELLINGTON CLUB DEFEATS JTHE ; •'; ; , WORLD. ' The bowling event pf-'.Saturday was . the annual . match between the Wellington Club and The World (as represented by tho other city; and . suburban- clubs) :' ■ It is somotliing for, ono club, even :if it be a' club with a largo membership,,to' pit..,fifteep rinks against tho two best;ririks .froni-tho otiier clubs and win yet this is. what tho-Wellington Club has been, doing for years, and, on Saturday liiost; (Iccisivelv'.so. When ; tho figures were up .'at the. end. of.-tlie games on Satitrday: afternoon, at-was,:, found that tho -Wellington; Club's teams had scored: 350 points to their'opponents'.'249, leaving a margin of 101 points to tho good. Tho : 'World was' represented by two rinks from'the Thorndon, Victoria, Newtown, Karori, Kelburno, Hutt, I'etone Clubs, and oho. rink from tho newlyfprmed;Eastbourne 1 Club. Of these onlyNew'town;nyas: able .to.'bring-off a:win against tho. parent; club, and that was: effected lii -oiio gime: only, ; iii vwhich the . veteran George Princo (s.), ;succeeded iu out-manceuvring Wellington's V-redoubtable skip., Churchward to the extent of six points;: Wellington' lost five single games, the .winning skips, being Bonnett (Karori),. Ross '(Totone), Barraud (Thorndon), Henry (Hutt), and Prince (Newtown, and there wero two.: tics in single games. ' 'v'm. -■' - ■ '/'■■ ■'
Ono of the most rcmnrkablo games played in tk6 i tourney''was.-'thntVbetweon the rinks skipped by Bell" ("Wellington) and Brackonridge '(Victoria); 'At the finish of 'the' eighth head tho Victoriacskip. "liad' piled up 13 to Bell's 4,,.but tho proverbial ill-luck of tho ''baker's dozra" 'bxemplified-itself, for Wellington' scored; on ; the n'oxt" -five heads. Brackenridge scored one. on the fourteenth head, but from that out was" not able to notch another point,, and tho K»ine'.ended—Wellington, 39; Victoria 14; . Balluiger (Wellington) v. Siovwright (Wellington) had lio difficulty in drawing away from l-Townshond - (Karon, but tho latter's co-skip., Bennett, effected a wclldesoryed winfrom' 'Sir Edward Gibbes. ' During the afternoon a Southerly .threatened, • hut-beyond a few spots/of.-rain; (Captain 'Edwin' counted fivo on' his 'mat), the '/nnteh-dosir.cd' deluge lield off. : Many<of'.'.tbe bowlers: actually said that they .would, willingly, forego, their game in favour of u good downpour,; but wore not olfoi'ed a chance': tti'mako' such ii sacrifice. Tho ladies, in gay atUre, 'filled the broad balcony of tho handsome pavilion, and were rewarded with a particularly satisfying after-,
noon ton, served by a .number of charming girls under the direction of 'Mcsdames Bush and Roach. , '
Before the games commenced Mr. Thomas Bush, President of the Club, oxtonded a. hearty welcome to the visitors, and, while noting Wellington's, succoss in the past, was dubious if it could be repeated. They meant to try hard, but a defeat would not prevent their challenging again next year. He hoped they would all have an onjoyablo afternoon. (Applause.) ■ . THE RESULTS.
