(rROM Ol'R SMCIAL COnitESrONDENTS.) ■ 4 ■ PALMERSTON. Two alarms of fire were given here yesterday, and on each occasion the brigade was upon the scene with commendable promptitude. The'first .outbreak turned out to bo a chimney in Duke Street, whilo tho second was a hedge in Main Street. : A further alarm of fire was given at four o'clock, when smoke was seen issuing from a three-roomed cottage owned by Mr. C. Gascoync. Tho occupants were away at Patea. The, damage is not great, as the brigado succeeded in extinguishing the fire shortly after its arrival. The pressure of water was very poor. Owing to tho shortness of water the water carts were taken off tho streets yesterday.' Tho surroundings aro anything but pleasant, as the town is enveloped in denso smoke from the bush fires in the ranges. ; A garden fete was held at Mr. Strang's grounds yesterday in aid of All Saints' Church building fund. There was a largo attendance and a substantial. sum will bo raised. I . FEILDING. The statement of assets and liabilities in the bankrupt estate of Samuel Kirk, board-ing-house keeper,' of Feilding, shows that tho amount owing to unsecured creditors is £278 os. Dtl.,- and to ■ tho secured creditors, . £630. Tho estimated valuo of tho security, is £630; the book debts are set down at £14, estimated to yield' £30; and tho deficiency is £248 os. 9d. . Tho committee of the Horticultural Society has decided to abandon tho autumn show this year, owing, to tho unfavourable weather. Tho members of tho, conimitteo agreed to offer assistance to tho Technical School Committee in the holding of a fruit, vegetable, and flower exhibition on a smaller scalo at the opening of the school. : The monthly meeting of tho : Technical School Committee was held on Tuesday night, Mr. B. Goodbehero presiding. Mr. Hintz, who is to take temporary charge, was. present at the mooting. Mr. Pirani said,he liad written to tho Minister for Education witii reference to. tho opening of the Technical School,.and yot, the. reply that the Minister could open the school on March 10. • Ho suggested that they.get tho business'people to close on thi3 day instead of Wednesday that week. It was proposed that , the Technical School be formally opsned on March 10, at 3 p.m., and that an exhibition of fruit, flowors, and vegetables bo held in.the afternoon.'.
