ATTEMPTED MURDER AND SUICIDE. JEALOUSY. % (BY TELEGK.U'II—MUSS ASSOCIATION,) Wairoa, January 27, An attempted murder and suicide is reported from Oponiti, a country plnco 15 miles from AVairoa, and 50 miles from Gisborne by coach. It appears that a young man named A. E. Stevens wag. oscortmg a young lady, named Brownlee from Mrs. Stevens's to tho houso of Mr. T. liynio, lior undo, about six. o'clock iast night. hile on , the way they were waylaid by a man named David ' Irwin, said to be-from New {South "Wales, who fired with a revolver at Mr. Stevens, wounding him in tho arm -and knocking him off his horse. Irwin then fired at Miss Brovrnlco, and hor horso, taking fright, started back to Stevens s house. While Stevens was getting up Irwin fired at him again, but'missod, and then turned tho revolver against himself, shooting himself under tho chin, and dying almost instantly. The police havo left for the scone. Tho dotails aro meagre. , Cis'oorne, January 27, The District Coronor has been advised that Duvid Irwin, a labourer at Opouiti shot at Alfred Stovcna and then shot himself dead. Jealousy is supposed to bo tho cause of tho trouble.
