- A-NEW SOCIETY. . new Association" lias been formed in this city, wider the namo of the Wellington Fabian Societyj which jiinis at being an association of. moderate Socialists, who will meet together for the temperate discussion of social problems, ami try to exercise a quiet influence on tho time, without crying out for ail immediate new heaven and new earth. Tho now society is virtually a revival of the old "Wellington Citizens' Institute. The following are tile objects of the association, as officially declared(l) Meetings for the discussion of:. rjiinstions connected with Socialism; (2). The further investigation of economic problems "arid the collection of facts contributing to their elucidation; (.3) The issue of publications' containing information on social questions and arguments relating to Socialism ; (4) The promotion of social lectures arid debates in'other societies and clubs; (o) The representation of the Society in public conferences, and discussions on social questions; (6) The creation of a municipal and political plan of reform; (7) The issue of municipal and political manifestos. The meetings will lie held 'in future every Friday evening, at oO,Manners Street.. At'the last meeting Mr. F: T. Moore read a paper on "State Banking;" and at next Friday's gathering the subject' for an address and discussion will be the "Success or Failure of,tho Arbitration Act." The Society lias from 25 to 30 members. It hopes to bo sufficiently strong, by next'winter, to prevail upon the City Council to allow its lectures to take part in tho series of popular addresses under municipal patronage, from which, it is alleged, they wero shut out last winter, by reason of the unpopularity ' of' their views. , The officers of the. Society aro as follow: — Chairman, Mr. F. T. Moore; delegates to the Parliamentary Representation ' Committeo, Messrs. F. Moore and S. J. Patterson; committ.ec, Jjfossrs. T. Moore, Patterson, , Munro, J.; Tpbmalli, and A. Smith; Secretary and Treasurer (pro. torn.), Sir. J. Tooinath.
