One of the most.interesting social-.events that has taken place for soino time was the reception given yestorday afternoon., by i,Mrs: I rouse at her residence,. " Qricklewood," Clifton Terrace, in honour of Mr;, iiiid - c Mrs. ICennerley Rumford (Madame Clara: Btitt), when, a largo number of guests werci present, delighted to hnvo the opportunity of meeting the-great singers,. : . -L-' Most of the visitors soon found their way to the lawn, which had. been' built> in; and covered with canvas so. as to, fornii a isliady promenade, > and very pleasant it-was there with tho growing flowers for decoration',"and glimpses,of tho harbour from between tho bushes. Tho drawing-room Was adornbd >:ivitV bowls of brilliant fiactus dahlias, < arid in tho tea-room the tables were decorated, -' with, sweet, peas set in tho how, silver woodlandvases, which aro in thtmselves a-'pretty decoration. An orchestra, under the leadership of Mr. Truda, ,and composed of members of tho Exhibition orchestra, was stat-ipned'• on tho stairway landing! At the end'iof:'-the afternoon Mr. Alfred Hill delighted iMadan'" liutt and her husband by singing-' them "I}!?, Maori poi song, to his own pianqforte ; accompaniment.
Mrs. Praise received her guests in a brown chiffon taffeta, with vest'of handsome cream lace and coral ornaments. Miss v Erouse was in white muslin, embroidered in black, with, shoulder straps and sash of black,-. vq]vet ribbon.
Mrs. Kennerley Rumford looked 'magnificent in a handsome dress of brown''chilfon over gold tissue. This was trimmed.ifjth' gold luce and ruchings of chiffon put on' in a braided design, with tassels of cVnillc." A most .enjoyable picnic, arranged by Mrs. Jack Rose, was held last Saturday afternoon at Trentbiim. The picnickers wended their way into Mr. Barton s beautiful bush, where they had afternoon tea, and later on when tho moon rose they had' supper, and, at .ahout D o'clock loft for tho Hutt.. Th<sro wero about forty young people present, amongst them maiiy cyclists. Tho day wiis all that eoukl.be desirod, and the scramble through bush or along the riverside was much enjoyed. The party included Mrs. J. Rose. Mrs. H. Rose, Misses Lukin, Bodwin, TreadWo|l, Sladdqn, Johnston, Foster, Matthews, and Jones; Sir K. Douglas; aiid Messrs. Calender, Ryloy, Laing, Fulton, Richter, Fussell, and Rose. '
